In a case like this (codeman's post), it would be far better to have "Pops" respond rather than an employee.
I understand and commend your loyalty, but perhaps the better course of action would have been to let Pops know of the negative comment, and let him respond here in public, or by email/message to the poster.
Just my opinion.
