A backup generator is so far down my list of things I would spend my money on that, if I ever actually got there, it wouldn't even be a question of what I'd do because, well, it would no longer be a question of money but convenience.

Given that, I'd call up the most local shop with the best reviews and have them do everything...including annual maintenance.

These things are used so rarely that if they don't function perfectly EVERY single time, it would absolutely be a waste of money.
