Sorry I missed this--you must have posted at about the same time as I did.

I'm not a millennial, but the above reply is accurate--two hyphens acts as an em dash on devices that don't have (easy) access to them.

I use them when appropriate--to explain something that has just been said, as opposed to a parenthetical comment (which adds potentially unnecessary extra info) or semicolon (which combines two related independent clauses without a comma and conjunction).
