I don't boat much anymore myself but have put one in the lake without the plug before. Oh they work just find as long as you keep moving forward and never stop.
Still remember yelling to my B.I.L. on shore to go to the house and get the plug out of the garage well I kept the boat moving forward. Do something like that once and you typically never do it again.
