Do a google search for 'thermo-couple in propane gas line' ..... a propane powered home hot water heater with a pilot light will have a small thermo-couple link at the end of the propane line, where it goes into the heater.

It automatically closes when the pilot light is out, turning off the propane. The small amount of heat made by the pilot light is what keeps the thermo-couple from closing.

It is also what makes it difficult to restart a pilot light, propane hot water heater because the thermo-couple needs some heat to get it to open after the pilot light has been turned off.
