I'm far from an expert also. But in thinking about this the other day, I think the upthesaukee is right about the consistently cold temps.

It will be interesting to see if they start appearing this coming weekend. I suspect that any changes in lake level have a lot to do with them also. Assuming (and hoping) the thaw predicted for this coming weekend happens, I would expect the level to rise some, which will cause some shifting in the ice pack.
