Regarding the boat show and from a straight-up business standpoint, I think the security has everything to do with the sponsors wanting to invest in precautions to avoid an incident that could negatively impact their brand. Sad that the world has come to this but as a frequent traveler, I see more and more of this over-clubbing - especially in the big cities. Fact is, with 31 mass shootings thus far in 2020 (not all with deaths but some with many) it's not a question of will there be another incident but where. Personally, with all the nut cases today, I don't have a problem with the added security. A little inconvenience is worth the extra safety in my book. By the way, they did have the security when I attended last year.
