I don't think it was a prank.
The word "prank" commonly means to play a trick or practical joke on someone.
I did not detect a note of anything other than sober, serious intent in the mind of the person who left message left in his mail box.
Seems to be the same as leaving a message on an answering machine, or telling someone something face to face, except it ensures anonymity.
