Are there some good rules of thumb or ways of testing to determine that the ice is safe for walking on, say from shore to Wallace island?

Buy a hand auger and start drilling as you go, look for variations in the ice color and drill those areas. Stay clear of pressure ridges.

If you see other activity stop and ask if they know the ice thickness.

I like to see at least 6-8 inches before I will venture out.
