If anyone can tell me why a state sales tax (only) with only food, medicine, and clothing exempt is not the fairest approach to taxation, I'm all ears. All other approaches are fraught with problems. Sales tax collects purely on disposable income. Who can argue with that? And, I don't want to hear that it's one more tax and the others won't go away, because that is a problem that can be solved. Retirees being forced from their homes, real estate assessment inequities, and income taxes with all their exemptions and collection issues are reasons to get serious on this type of approach.
