Thank you for the suggestions everyone!

We tried several things: putting a boom box in the barn, and spreading predator urine around the entrance to their den. Nothing seemed to bother them much.

In the end, we had the perfect experience. They stayed around and would play merrily in front of the kids for a few weeks, then disappeared on their own. Looks like you were right about their moving on once they know humans are around.
