I'd always prefer to use a local contractor but Work comp rates are so high its hard to find good roofers right now (at least for basic shingle work). Assuming they stay in business then Lowe's and Home Depot will stand behind their work, which is a lot more than one can say for a lot of the private contractors.
Many of the private contractors may have retired, out of business, or moved out of the area.
