If you think about it septic systems are basically dumping affluent into the ground, the only "better" systems are the rather exotic ones that discharge only potable water and actually treats what goes in before it is expelled. Of course it can be argued that the methodology and components have changed over the course of years but really the only significant change to a traditional system is you can't just put one anywhere.

It's hard to imagine how generations ago it was thought to be OK to discharge into rivers and lakes without any long term consequence. Even worse when it was toxic by products of manufacturing.
