My recollection from the Winnipesaukee bible, "Three Centuries on Winnipesaukee" is that the water in the north end of the lake is as pure as anywhere else, but it is "black" based on trees/natural waste that decayed on the bottom. (Yes, I know that was published 90 years ago.)
I'd guess you have clean water if you take a sample and send it to a lab. Once in a while we do this on Welch Island and we continue to drink the water as we have for the last 60+ years. Test your water. I think you'll be pleased. And yes, there will be some bacteria. It's a lake, not a well.
I'm always amazed at the posts about adding various filter systems when people have not tested the water.
