Main reason I had a land line in both houses is so my cottage sitter could call me if there was a problem. If temperature drops below or above set point, smoke alarm fires, power failure, alarm system fires all would call me on the land line.

I also occasionally have to send or receive a Fax.
There are other ways to accomplish those things today. So I still have both running, since I have them and they are free and still work perfectly. The cottage sitter has come in handy a couple times over the years.
I've had the Cottage Sitter (earlier model) since 1986 on a real analog land line and then switched to OOMA when I learned about it.
Oh that's how I did a remote Thermostat decades ago.
We also like having a common "junk" phone line. Any time anything asks for a phone number we give it the land line, unless we feel it's critical for immediate contact. That way we get less spam calls on cell phones.
