That is the one down side of owning a season place... even more so if it is on and island and your aren't able to check on it through the winter so easily. Over the years, my family has been fairly fortunately... Most of the damage is self inflected....
- not draining the water completely (burst pipes are always fun)
- forgetting something in the fridge (let me tell you milk doesn't age well) (don't ask)
- finding a creature or two that found its way inside because they can......
And those are the things you can prevent mostly.....
Now on the other had, you have the damage sheets of ice can do...... shifting permanent docks, braking up rip rap used to prevent erosion.... moving huge cement blocks used to anchor articulating docks....
Yep the first trip can bring many surprises.... This year I get to hear all about it over the phone, with the dreaded, "what do I do to fix it question"........
