I usually end up gluten-free because I am low fat. You do not need a special place, pretty much anyplace that serves grilled fish should be fine. If it's a sandwich place at lunch, go with grilled chicken or something else on top of a salad.

If your friend has a severe allergy (gluten, nuts, whatever), it is also important to "read" the waiter's response when you tell them about the allergy. If they seem confused, they (and perhaps the rest of the staff) are not trained, and you should bail.
