Quick addition, since it kinda ties into some conversations that have happened here: my daughter asked why our waiter thanked us when we sent back two Shirley Temples (that were made with soda water instead of Sprite—weird), and I suggested it was because we were kind about it.
Well, later, we asked about his accent and he told us about how he's here from Croatia on a study-abroad program and that there are some others in the area as well but not as many as there once were.
He'll be finishing here in a few weeks and then traveling the US for a couple weeks after that before heading home to start school in October.
As part of the conversation, he explained how much he enjoyed working here because—and this surprised us a tad—"Americans are patient."
I'm not sure if that's a reflection of where he works—it's probably more difficult to be a jerkface at a nice lakeside place like Akwa?!—or a reality that maybe we don't always consider, but it was nice to hear.
