There shouldn't be anything you can do thst can "damage" software. The only thing that can be unsafe is if you don't wait for a firmware update to finish and somehow shut off the power before it is done.

I don't have the unit that you have, but I used to engineer software to update or flash firmware. Consumer devices should be very fool proof, except for a powe off too early which can't be controlled by the manufacturer.
