Yes, depth is a factor but the biggest factor is that Big Bay as it is called, is far larger an expanse of water than the broads is and is "almost" never calm. Wind of some kind is always a factor. Even on the coldest calmest night below zero it will not freeze and if it does, the wind comes up and blows it off to shore the next day. I have many pictures of my kids standing on ten to twelve foot high piles of ice on our shore front.
