It has to do with direction of propeller rotation..and..engine torque effect. "Left" handed" Vs "Right handed" propellers.. Right handed props turn clockwise, as viewed from aft..looking forward. Older boats quite often were left handed. Today's single engined boats are usually Right handed.

It also had to do with engine torque effect. Twin engine boats will have one prop rotating clockwise and the other prop will rotate counter-clockwise..cancelling out the torque.

Single engined boats tend to lean to one side (torque effect)..like a "List" while underway at speed..so the Solo drivers weight is located on the opposite side of the boat to counteract the lean. NB
