Depending on the power curve of the engine sometimes dropping a pitch will still maintain or even increase speed. We found this on the Boundary Waters. Engine mounting hole position on the transom makes a difference as well. The Verado runs 6400, yet we were running mid 5000's as it was set up so we still had a ways to go in the curve.
