I have an Eastern 22' Lobster with a rub rail, no fenders required at any vertical post style dock or recommended.

If I were to use unprotected fenders against the gel coat it will definitely scratch the #$%* out of the gel coat in no time at all, minutes not hours! Fendersox would be the only way I would use any fenders directly against gel coat, even then it would be for a short time only and with little to no movement, such as boats tied tightly together.
