Diver1111 makes many good points, including that
all the insured share in the expense of replacing a vehicle falling through the ice.
One important point that needs adding was discovered by newscaster Dwight Lauderdale, for South Florida's TV station,
WSVN.
(
WSVN is partnered with
WHDH of Boston, and gave the world national news-anchor
Rick Sanchez.)
Anyway, perhaps twenty years ago as an experiment, Dwight Lauderdale drove a big sedan into a South Florida canal
alone—but surrounded by divers—who videotaped the experience of escaping a car that was under water. Dwight Lauderdale knew "the drill" of allowing the car to fill with water before opening the door.
The resulting video was riveting: even with the door fully opened, he couldn't get out!
In the interview that followed, Dwight Lauderdale related that he hadn't practiced his escape without first removing his seatbelt!
