OK, if it's who I think it is, here's the "deal": she's been undergoing treatment for cancer for quite some time now. I suspect she has to work even when she's feeling like sh*t, because the reality is that fewer and fewer employees receive any kind of health insurance benefit from their employer, and it gets harder every day for even the healthiest of non-smokers to afford individual premiums.
Under normal circumstances, this woman is the nicest person you could ever meet.
What's that old expression...something about not judging someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes??
