The steamboats are here!

Lots of steamboats steaming around today. I especially liked the one with paddle wheel propulsion.

Not the only example

At the Loon Center's annual meeting a few weeks ago, a loon photographer from the Derry area showed videos of loons getting on shore to take care of business. He said it seemed unusual to him, a...

DSL is getting better

It would be interesting to see which services you subscribed to that jacked up your price so much. My charge for cable TV went up (June to July) from $67 to $82 but the internet price remained the...

DSL is OK for some...

DSL is cheaper than cable and speeds are a lot faster than they were, but your speed capacity is determined by how far from their roadside switch you are. Some people in M'boro are still getting...

86 and skunky

Can't tell you the year, but the temp hit 86 at least once for at least a day or two and frequently gets into the low 80s. The algae blooms, especially the cotton candy blobs, start happening more...

But, winter...

The septic installer drilled a hole in the flapper valve, so the water would slowly drain out of the pipe between the holding tank and the leach field. This is so that if we're gone for a few months...

If you can't get good internet on the island (and with DSL, is it ever good?) you could look into radio bridging to the mainland. You'd need a cooperative residence with cable internet on the...

The ironic futility of aggressive bubbling

This guy ran his bubbler 24x7 all winter. In the early spring, it melted all the way across the narrows and downwind by about 1/4 mile. As the ice started to break up, a north wind came up, pushing...

Ice flow

The ice is moving quickly to the north this afternoon. Ice crinkles as it hits rocks and is building up on some. Fog is blowing off the gray ice, at times obscuring visibility. A neighbor put...

Climate change is local change

The hike in fees is one way to get more funds and DES needs more funds to help protect the state's natural resources. Locally, we can't do much about global climate change but DES can help us act...

Village Kitchen

If you ask, sometimes it is OK to park at the back of the Village Kitchen parking lot. There is only room for a few trailers and customers obviously have priority, but it is sometimes an option.

The state owns the water that docks are in, so why not charge rent to help maintain water quality. DES needs more funds to get the job done, but the risk of permit rates getting out of control is...

As long as this thread has gone loony, its worth pointing out that the natural habitat for loons is moving north. There aren't many loons in MA and CT any more and the population was declining in NH...

Low Wake anyone?

We could use a low wake zone to go with the no wake zone. The no wake signs seem silly in some spots, but spot on in others. A no wake should mean it, but allowing up to 6mph in a low wake zone...
