Easy Fix
It would seem a piece of 1/16" GAC (Galvanized aircraft cable) with a crimp sleeve on either end would solve the issue. It may be hard to find these in small quantities however. In my business...

There is a wonderful Sign Shop in Gilford called Gator Sign. They are near the Airport. Stop in and talk to them about your project. They do a lot of boats and I'm sure you can get some good info....
