The power transformers for the store are on a pole at the corner of my driveway. This morning, there was a Co-op bucket truck there, closing the pole circuit breakers to power up the store. Something...

If you're into steam, check out the New England Steam and Wireless Museum in East Greenwich, RI. They are best visited at an annual event called the Yankee Steam-Up, a couple of weeks after Labor...

It is a gas refrigerator. Gas mechanism at the bottom wit an ice tray rack at the top. The frame at 2:09 shows the manufacturer's name as "SERVEL" - a very popular brand of gas fridges in its time....

conducting

Back in the late 60s-early 70s, my years as a counsellor at Camp Idlewild, I did not like being in camp on opening or closing day. The result was myself and two other staff members did "conducting"...

Sounds like a particularly large (>20 m) meteor called a "bolide". These produce a very bright contrail which can be seen during the day. They also occasionally explode in a very bright fireball...

The plane shows nose damage - missing a piece of cowling, missing prop hub cone, and has a bent prop. Searching for its tail number reveals other info: It's last recorded landing was at Kill Devil...

Way back when I was a counsellor at Camp Idlewild, a friend and I had a small outboard skiff and we spent a day off putting around the lake. We forgot only one thing - refilling the fuel tank! We ran...

I assume you're looking at buying a lot/building on one of the major islands, with other residents as well, as opposed to one of the small one-house islands. As far as I know, the only major island...

flash safety

Flashing light exchanges between the Mount and shore has been a long-time tradition on the lake, and most if not all of us in the wheelhouse will happily reply if it's safe to do so. Every so often...

honk your horn!

Hi S-o-M

If my geography is correct, your beach area is facing Bear Island. The boat appears to be the Doris E, which goes through that channel several times a day, sometimes in both directions....

All of that advice is great - just one small detail. Mt. Willard (2804 ft) overlooks Crawford Notch, not Franconia. The drive on rt302 up the notch is beautiful, especially when you drive right up...

If your friend is into food service, she might be interested in the M/S Mt. Washington. Inquire at the Weirs Beach office - General Manager Jim Morash or Head Chef Kevin Fisk for details.

idlewild boats

I think strongly that the boat Hans found is one of the double-ended Idlewild boats. Unfortunately, that pre-dates me a lot. I'll have to do some research.
