Thank You Button

http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/...ost_thanks.gif

I love this feature!!!

How does one get a very useful thank you button into their thread?
I cannot make out any rhyme or reason to when and where they appear.
Is it possible to have them on all threads?
A lot of the time the thank you button response is just the ticket.
(I think that I had a bit too much coffee today, I'm a bit revved up. ;) )
Thanks!

Celia

Celia, I think the thank you button is only available in certain sub-forums. In the particular sub-forum, the button appears in each post in each thread. It is not by topic. At least that's what I am led to believe...

webmaster 03-10-2010 02:31 PM

I only enabled the "Thanks" button on a few forums to see how it went. I picked forums that usually have advice, reviews or information posted that could draw a Thank You. Example of those forums are Boating, Restaurants, Weather, Pets, Fish Tales and Getting Here.

I was actually going to ask a question about this after the current question about posts not related to the lake. Here's what I was going to ask:

1. Should the Thanks button be enabled on all forums?

2. Should the Groan button be enabled?

Many people have asked "Where's the No Thanks button?" The Groan button would serve that purpose.

I'm not completely sold on the Thanks and Groan buttons because I think that they clutter up a thread display and don't seem to be widely used. I have never activated the Groan button because it doesn't seem to fit with our "friendly and helpful" guideline.

As usual, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this and if everyone wants the Thanks or even the Groan buttons I'll probably take the advice of you members.

Thanks/Groan

Thanks - Eliminate - Just clutter
Groan - Never

Sorry I jumped the gun by posing this question before you were ready. As usual, your insight is excellent. Thank you.

I have not noticed that the Thanks button has cluttered up the threads.
Now that you have pointed this out, I may change my mind. :rolleye2:

Is it possible that someone who might not be inclined to respond to a topic might use the button instead?
Some people appear to be shy when it comes to posting. (Apparently a foreign thing to me. )

In my opinion, it has been nice to see when other members of the Forum like someone’s comment. It may be cutting down on the number of posts in thread, which could translate to less clutter over all. Another benefit is that it might keep those dead horses in hot threads from being beaten so badly.

Occasionally there have been posts that a groan button would be appropriate for, but as you pointed out, it doesn't seem to fit with our "friendly and helpful" guideline.
I wholeheartedly agree. No Groan button please!

I still like the Thanks button a lot and would like try it everywhere on the Forum. Perhaps a trial period where we can a re-evaluate the Thanks after a certain amount of time?

Majority should rule, so let's see what our other Forum friends think.

Thanks for discussing this issue.

Cel

Don,
I am a big fan of the Thanks button as it tends to eliminate the copy and paste Thank you post phenomenon. I sometimes wish we had a "what the heck are you thinking?":) for certain members but I don't think the groan would be productive.

Pepper 03-10-2010 08:01 PM

I love the Thanks option, and have often wished for it in threads where it didn't exist. I like RG's idea to give it a trial run forum-wide. ;)

As for the groan button - nah! We can groan loudly to ourselves if we feel the need. :D

brk-lnt 03-10-2010 09:43 PM

The "Groan" button seems like it would give people an opportunity to voice dissatisfaction with a comment without also interjecting personal opinion and possibly spawning a new debate.

I think the Thanks/Groan buttons should be more prevalent. Personally I've never felt they've cluttered things up, in fact, just the opposite. The Thanks button eliminates the need for a lot of "Me too" posts, but still allows members to "participate" in a conversation or show support for an idea or comment.

Newbiesaukee 03-10-2010 10:25 PM

Like the Thanks button. Don't like the Groan button. Aside from not liking the concept of the Groan button, there is a practical reason. If you get a Thanks, then this supports the comment and it is self evident. Instead of a groan, it would be better for the groaner to express a reason for "groaning" which might be useful to the thread, in general. No problem with honest disagreement but I would like to know the disagreer's thoughts.

upthesaukee 03-10-2010 10:49 PM

Like the thanks

I probably don't use it as often as I should, but may use it more often if it was enabled on other forum threads. I agree with the notion it can save repetitious posts whereby I agree that the person I thank "has said it all."

Groan: nope...not keeping with our friendly forum :). Besides, it is healthier to sit back, shake your head, as R Guy said : ask "what were you thinking", and then move on. Quick rise in blood pressure, a couple of deep breaths, and then back to enjoying the best website and forum I have found.

Oh, and thanks Don:)

I am not sure whether to agree with this, groan, or hit the "Thanks" button. ;)
Just kidding, I totally agree with you.

mcdude 03-11-2010 07:42 AM

The groan button might be an appropriate response to certain forum members "strange" sense of humor!

SIKSUKR 03-11-2010 10:56 AM

The "groan" button could be called the "SIKSUKR" button by some .
No Siksukr or groan button please. From my view the thanks button makes much less clutter. All the ageeable posts are in one neat box instead of many posts saying the same thing.

Jonas Pilot 03-11-2010 11:00 AM

Thanks for the "Thanks!".

Pineedles 03-11-2010 12:05 PM

No groan

It would be too easy to hit the groan button and hence it could increase the tension level in the threads. No groan vote here, but thanks for asking.

WinnDixie 03-11-2010 04:19 PM

Yes

on the Thanks button...for all the reasons stated; no on a Groan one...for same!

trfour 03-11-2010 06:11 PM

The Thanks Works Great...

and saves lots of ink...

No need to hear any Groans out here, all the way from Texas! :) :look:

My opinion.....keep the Thanks button and open it up to all forums.

The groan button.....not needed!

Thanks.

Thank you for posting that. I like the http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/...ost_thanks.gif button idea too. (... and it would have eliminated this post  )

RLW 03-14-2010 02:20 PM

http://i39.tinypic.com/o9n9f8.gif but no http://i39.tinypic.com/o9n9f8.gif on the groans:)

Argie's Wife 03-16-2010 11:35 PM

I like the 'thank you' button because it seems to keep in line with saying of "if you don't have anything nice to say..." and helps to keep the place friendly, in my opinion. I love this place - some days it's my only contact with other adults... :rolleye2::D

The lake, good times, and good friends... what else do we need? :)

trfour 03-17-2010 02:14 AM

All Us Winni We's...

Need to give thanks...

In case closed, just a thought! :)

Please and Thank You are great words for a great forum and for almost any other place. Sure glad I asked why the feature was only at some of the WF sites earlier today and was referred here by a link sent from the webmaster. Thanks RG.

DRH 03-20-2010 06:39 AM

I like (and use) the "Thanks" button, but don't think the "Groan" button would add anything to the forums.

Seeker 03-20-2010 10:42 AM

Like the Thanks button but don't believe a groan button is needed.

Lucky1 03-23-2010 01:36 PM

Would really like to see the thanks button on all of the threads but do not feel all that strongly if others do not want it that way. Also it must be hard to know what members want as there seem to be hundreds of members and only a few responses at an given time on any thread.

webmaster 03-25-2010 09:58 AM

I've enabled the Thank You button on all forums.

webmaster 03-25-2010 09:01 PM

I've activated the showing of the Thank You stats next to each user's posts. Any feedback on that is welcomed.

I also limited the number of Thank You's per day to 5. Use them carefully.

Thank You.

I put a "thanks" to good use for this post. I think both of those above are very good ideas. Thanks Don!

chipj29 05-11-2010 11:49 AM

Lots of Thanks

Hi Don,
I have recently noticed a couple posters (donnamatrix for one) who have "Thanks" counts in the billions...literally. Is there a bug somewhere in the forum software that is causing that? Obviously with a "Thank you" limit of 5 per day, that number is not physically possible. Not a big deal at all, just curious.

Thanks
