Truck through ice at Governors Island
 

WMUR reported that a truck went through the ice near Governors Island last night at 8:15. When rescue arrived the 2 guys in the truck were on the top of the truck and were able to be rescued. I haven't heard anything else about the incident.

I've been watching them pull the truck out of the ice from the comfort of my couch. Looks like the truck was in 5ft of water just inside the lighted buoy. Only took them just over an hour to get it back on top of the ice. Lots of action on the bridge last night with all the rescue vehicles. Glad to hear no one was hurt. The ice conditions look more like the end of March then Feb with lots of open water around the docks and bridge.

Did they get to close to the open water under the bridge? I'm curious where it happened.

They went thru the ice near shallow open water just inside buoy fl 43. Looks like they were heading toward the island parallel to the bridge, not sure why because there's open water on that shore as well. Once they fished it out they towed the truck with an ATV toward Gilford Beach direction.

When you have electric windows and door locks, you are literally doomed once the water gets over the battery. One good reason my truck has manual windows.

If you are in salt water, there's more a chance of that, but in the lake that isn't usually an issue.

I've seen video's of headlights working under water for hours.

Not according to Mythbusters...electric windows worked more than 2 minutes after submersion!

....no way I'd do that 'patiently let the vehicle fill w/ water & then open doors' ....that's a recipe for drowning......two words.....'get out'...asap-pdq....when the ice gives way...and probably make a strong effort to keep your mouth shut....having witnessed many chipmonks & squirrels getting drowned in a Have-a-heart trap....the act of drowning seems to be non-stoppable after just 20-seconds of inhaling water...and it looks like agony & pain....but at least it is quick....

My atv was under water for 45 minutes and everything electrical still worked, most modern auto electronics have a fair amount of dust sealing protection that will buy you some time, the older rigs do not have this. But, atv electronics are water sealed which is very different than dust sealed.

Electric window motors are mounted in an area of the door panel that gets wet all the time, next time it rains, pop the interior panel off the door and take a look, those weather strips at the base of the window do not seal very well. I do not know for sure but I would think that the motors are sealed fairly well, again being submerged is very different than getting wet.

I will not be volunteering to put an end to this discussion and test it out.:eek:

Less, if you want to know what it feels like hold your breath till you pass out, just don't use something to prevent you from breathing, i.e. no clothspins. We have all skarfed up water while swimming, mix the two feelings together and that is what you get. There is another way to replicate exactly without actually taking a dunk in the water, but I will keep that to myself. I would think that the panick would be the worst part. Awful thing to think about though, and Less, stop drowning the squirels and chipmunks, people are going to start thinking you are weird!

...it's pretty simple....with unlimited number of acorns growing in my small lot...it's me vs the chipmonks & squirrels.......aarrgggg.....hee-yah.... ho-ho-ho....(theme song / JAWS the movie-here).......sorry, couldn't resist :D!

Actually, it helps in preventing the critters from invading the cottage and fiberglass insulation, where they try to set up a nest for the cold months.:rolleye1:
