Robs Gas Depot going to auction?

I have heard that Robs is going to be auctioned off soon...is this true?

WINNOCTURN 07-15-2009 10:25 AM

In The Sunday Citizen

The notice was in last Sunday's Citizen. I think the auction date was July, 17th.
They have been great supporters of the Moultonboro Snowmobile Club.

Hate to see another business fail in town.

I hope the new owner can make a go, if anyone even bids, it's a tough time to jump into a new business. Wonder what will happen to the old Gilligans building that is sitting out there. I'm curious how many of our elderly and native residents are having trouble paying their tax bills. The problem is we keep getting seasonal and new permanent residents that move here and try to change our town into what they left behind. The town I love is changing and not for the better.:(

Anonymous Source

I have heard through an anonymous source that Rob’s has been able to “work things out”. It looks like We will still have our Rob’s.

arthurc 07-22-2009 07:08 PM

Rob's

I was in there this morning. It seems that all the working people were new. they seemed to have problems getting their act together.

Irrigation Guy 07-22-2009 08:09 PM

Don't know what you mean about the help. Seems to me the people I see in there have been around for a while, some new ones but not that new. Pizza and all the other food is still real good and they got a new fuel vender to get more competitive on that. Hope they can make it through these tough times, they are good hard working people.

As a side note, I know they wanted to put in a little indoor seating and the septic would have needed to be designed to get it approved(although it is newish), and they associated costs were prohibitive to that idea.

Bumble 08-24-2009 11:25 PM

Heard it directly from Rob's wife, they lost the business and they'll be moving back to MA. I think Irving will be taking over the station (most likely meaning circle K and the loss of the delicious, fresh deli).

hawthorne 08-26-2009 08:44 PM

So sorry to hear that! I wish them well. I hope that whoever takes over is going to provide the same welcome and friendly atmosphere!

I heard that a Circle K ( an Irving) is going in. I live right near-by so I am pretty excited about it. It is time for a change!

Has anyone heard when Circle K is going to take over? They no longer have gas.

wifi 10-07-2009 06:20 PM

I heard recently, from an employee, Fred bought it back and was turning it into offices. No gas, no store... Time will tell.... divorces... shutter

ARV 10-08-2009 11:04 AM

No more Circle K

The "manager" at Robs told me the other day that today is their last day and that Irving/Circle K backed out (no reason why!). I heard the same about no convenience store or gas station.

Looks like Townsends and Red Hill/Irving will benefit from all the state truck gas fill-ups now!

And what's this about divorces? Rob's wife just had a baby not even a week ago!

wifi 10-08-2009 11:24 AM

The divorce part was from the Fuller days, where the wife got the store, now Fred has the building back. Again, this is what I hear from an employee.

twoplustwo 10-08-2009 11:28 AM

I heard the same thing as wifi

Fred Jr. got the building back at auction, Circle K backed out, and down the business goes.

LovelyToSeeYou 10-08-2009 04:11 PM

Many is the day that..........

I went off to get gas or a powerball ticket or some ice cream or a last minute item that was needed and most always found there. I have had the pizza when I was hungry and juice when I was thirsty. The people who worked at the register were always friendly and welcoming. I knew something was wrong all summer even though there were times when I heard that it was going to become something different and stay open. However the last few times I tried to go there, it was locked and dark at an early hour. Drat. I will miss that store for sure. I hope everyone involved turns out to find a new and happy place on this path we all travel together day by day.

Yes- I went in this morning and they said they were closing today. I went by again at 6pm and it was all shut down. Too bad- Murphy's is a pain to park at and it's hard to get in and out! I was very disappointed that Circle K backed out of buying Rob's.

SAMIAM 10-09-2009 09:47 AM

Does anyone know why Circle K backed out? I heard from one of their managers that they were very motivated and ready to buy it.

jack1706 10-09-2009 10:32 AM

I was at the auction last week.... a young man bought it for over a million. was he actually related to the lady there that auctioned it off?
He didn't appear to be ..
there was only a handfull off bidders and it quickly went to 1 Mil.
nice property but way overpriced to make any store work in these times!

Misty Blue 10-09-2009 10:49 AM

Nice folks

One winters day my plow truck broke down at Rob's. They helped me out and Rob even offered to lend me his F-350 so that I could finish my plow .

Deb and I wish them well in Mass. and hope that their employees find good work soon.

I will miss the convienence of their store and their breakfast pizza!

Misty Blue.

Best wishes to anyone trying to run an owner-operator gasoline station in the area. It certainly seems like they are disappearing the same way as owner-operator independant drug stores, convenience stores and donut stores. How can a single gasoline station compete against Irving, Exxon-Mobil or Cumberland Farms?

Lakesrider 10-10-2009 06:44 AM

I would keep watching this. I'll bet he never pays a Mil for it. Watch the sales section in the paper and see. Then watch what he pays in taxes. :rolleye2:

According to Vision Appraisal the property was purchased in July 2006 for $1.6M. It is assessed currently at $1.5M.

jack1706 11-21-2009 09:24 AM

It sold that day for 1.2 million...

several other bidders will be next in line..if that one, the suppossed son, doesn't come through.

too much money for this though still...

fatlazyless 11-21-2009 09:40 AM

Irving's in Meredith, down the bottom of high school hill, always has the lowest gasoline prices around. All local Cumberland Farm stores have stopped carrying the weekly Salmon Press newspapers; Meredith News, & Record-Plymouth, for some reason. The distribution of the LaDaSun has been 12-hours late, lately. The Moultonborough Irving, near Heath's has good low prices, and price is all that matters......gasoline brands are all the same product.

Gone are the days of Signal Gasoline....the brand that makes your car go further....Go further, Buy Signal!

Capt Bart 11-21-2009 08:12 PM

Word is that Fuller has bought it back and is going to make it all oil Co. and leave the store closed ,but who knows!

have you heard if the gas pumps will be open?

Lakesrider 11-23-2009 08:47 PM

It will be interesting to see what happens there. I can only imagine that a gas station will open there rather quickly. Because if it stays closed too long (12 months) the EPA will consider those tanks closed or abandoned and they will need to be pulled up, or cleaned out, filled with sand and the ground remediated to close it down. Very costly. The same thing was going to happen at the Moultonborough store. So I would almost (Tongue in cheek here...) Bet that there will be a gas station there again soon. If there is contamination in the ground you will see a lot of trucks and digging going on before anything else goes in there. Which is why I won't believe that the place sold for over a million dollars at an auction without someone doing some real good environmental testing of their own before taking the liability of a cleanup. When I see the tax bill for the sale I'll believe it. :look:

Capt Bart 11-23-2009 10:08 PM

Word is store and pumps are going ,I'll believe it when I see it.

Lakesrider 11-24-2009 06:51 PM

I still have friends in the UST Division of the EPA.....If you still want a gas station there i can make a call.....  ;)

Irrigation Guy 11-24-2009 09:07 PM

I did see them doing some drilling and testing before they had the auction. I sure hope it stays open for gas, as a snowmobiler it is the best place by far to get gas on the trail and Murphy's will be chaos on the weekends without it.

I myself will be buying more gas cans if it doesn't re-open for gas as there is too much pavement and to many turns to be made to get into Murphy's.

Kinda hard for me to do that with a 100 gallon tank for the boat however.

OCD, You can usually swing right into Skelley's on a Sat or Sun summer AM and top off there :rolleye1: They are never busy!

not only that but making the swing heading west then U turn into the pumps is very difficult, and darn near impossible when there are other patrons there. Trust me I would much rather go there then have to trailer all the way back towards center harbor but can't beat Fuller's parking lot turn in.

Lakesrider 11-28-2009 08:09 AM

When I kept my boat in RI there was a gas station that had a cool boat only fuel pump. It had an articulating arm so that if your boat was pretty high up on the trailer the arm would help you get to the tank opening more easily. Kind of like the fuel oil truck filler arms at the big oil tanks. Always thought that would be neat up here. You wouldn't have to pull into the regular pumps to fill up. If someone had a separate boat filling station they would make some serious money.:D

OCDACTIVE 12-15-2009 03:50 PM

any word on this being open? I haven't been up in awhile. I heard someone saw lights on?

Lakesrider 12-15-2009 04:39 PM

Lights have been on inside the store part for a while now. I drove by last night and no lights on outside as usual.

captbart 12-15-2009 07:24 PM

Fuller bought it back at auction (he held the first anyway, don't know if there was a second!) If he can find some one to buy / lease the store and pumps he will other wise the back will be oil Co. I'm sure it won't be cheap. Who knows?
