gas prices on the water

Paid $2.30 per gallon for fuel this weekend at Lakeport Landing. Not a bad price for full service on the water. Let's hope the prices stay low.

Phantom 04-27-2009 07:27 AM

Wasn't paying serious attention to it -- but I seem to recall that Channel Marine had a $2.25 sign on one pump (the others were still covered.

GoSnow 04-27-2009 09:17 AM

$2.58/gallon at Minge Cove

nightrider 04-27-2009 11:56 AM

ethanol

was that ethanol or non-ethanol gas?

Bear Island South 04-27-2009 07:17 PM

Shep's was at $4.25 on Sunday, still using last years supply, they had 200 gallons left to burn before a new delivery, I was told their next delivery will have ethanol.

Phantom 04-28-2009 08:49 AM

Nightrider -- I don't know if your question was directed at me or not --

Channel Marine uses the ValveTek brand which is supposedly formulated specificly for marine engines. I cannot find any indication in their literature if it has ethenol or not.

I've long heard that the best practice when switching to ethanol is to have a robust cleaning of the tanks.

"In the summer of 2003, marina owners in New York and Connecticut were warned by distributors to prepare for the arrival of ethanol-enhanced gasoline: “It has been determined that ethanol fuels may cause sediments present in underground storage tanks to mix with the fuel and, as a result, plug filters, and potentially plug customer vehicle fuel filters. Additionally, the presence of tank water bottoms during normal operation may reduce the oxygenate content and octane rating below product specifications. Therefore, it is absolutely imperative [distributor’s emphasis ] that each tank be properly cleaned prior to the delivery of ethanol-enhanced gasoline. ...”

So for $400 (200 gallons x $2) they are going to sell gas at last years prices and tick off how many customers? Talk about bonehead business moves. If I pull up to a gas dock this spring and see $4 gas, I will never buy gas from that guy again. Gas is a commodity, you sell for what the market will bear, not what you paid for it. Works the same way on the way down as it did on the way up.

PC31 04-28-2009 09:49 AM

ethanol

I was told by Lakeport Landing that they can no longer get non-ethanol gas. All gas will have ethanol, better stock up on stabilizer!!:(

Isn't it strange that the price stays high on old gas til it's used up but if they have full tanks and there's a price increase a week later the price goes up.

Woodsy 04-28-2009 10:07 AM

Drove by Channel Marine on my way into work this am. They are advertising valvetec Non-ethanol gas on thier sign....

Woodsy

LIforrelaxin 04-28-2009 11:25 AM

Gas prices on the northern part of the lake as always about 25 cents higher.....

Also a note to people about ethanol.... stabilizer will be a must if you don't use your boat on a regular basis.... and once you start putting ethanol gas in the tank don't switch... in other words, if Channel ends up being unique stay away unless that is where you normally get gas.... I am not saying this to be mean to the guys at channel, but mixing the formulations is BAD!!!!!!!!! and will create moisture build up....

My recomendation for stabilizer is the stuff by startron.... going to be picking some up this week myself........

bilproject 04-28-2009 12:25 PM

Y-Landing will not have gas for a few weeks as they are having the tanks cleaned in preperation for ethanol mix. Probably why Brown's are so high. All gasoline sold in NH and ME will be ethonol after May 1 off or on road

It's not EPA required that all the fuel be non ethanol in northern NH it's just whats readily available from Revere and Portland fuel depots. I wouldn't be surprised if theirs going to be some no ethanol fuel available from marinas willing to pay a premium to get it.

meredith weekender 04-29-2009 06:27 AM

My understanding of the valvetech fuel is that it does not have ethanol in it. Yesterday, Channel was advertising fuel for $2.35 per gallon.

This is mis-information, I did a little snooping around Valvtect is an addative, the fuel still has Ethanol in it. Valvtect is just like Starbrites Startron. According to a couple of Marinas I have talked to they have the ability to get it directly from the depot with the Valvtect already mixed, which is why some Marina's are advertising it.

So that is a little more on the subject.

meredith weekender 04-29-2009 01:19 PM

tThanks for the clarification on valvtech.

cowislander 05-01-2009 08:32 PM

No more ethanol free gas on the lake

I just asked the folks at Anchor Marine about ethanol.....they say that as of 2009 its law that all marinas on the lake sell the 10% mixed fuel. No more ethanol free fuel.....bummer!

Rinkerfam 05-01-2009 10:38 PM

I'm probably way late to the party, but what is the deal regarding the use of stabilizer with gasoline containing ethanol? I have a 5 year old boat that has run on ethanol-free gasoline to date. If I can only get gas with ethanol from this point forward what is the protocol for the use of stabilizer. Do I add it at each fill-up or is it only required before extended storage? I want to stave off the premature failure of any mechanical components, so the advice of those knowing more about this than I would be greatly appreciated.

hancoveguy 05-01-2009 10:47 PM

Kudos to Melvin Village

Splashed the boat today but not before throwing $60 in gas in on the way up. Got out on the lake and within 30 minutes gauge read "E" or nearly "E". Nineteen mile bay not open yet so we went back to Melvin Village. At 5:10 the sign said closed (open til 4pm), walked up to the store and caught someone leaving, explained the situation and the man (should have got his name) gave me a ride back down to the pump and reopened to sell me gas. Topped off for $2.67/gallon, ethanol gas with valvtech additive. Fortunately the problem was my gauge and I wasn't really that desperate after all. But kudos to Melvin village, this guy happily helped us out well after closing time, $2.67 was a bargain today...

Bear Island South 05-02-2009 06:17 AM

stay clear of Shep's they are still at $4.25

rick35 05-02-2009 08:41 AM

Not surprised

Its too bad the current ownership at Brown's is this way. Their service is great and we've used them for years. I talked to Bill Jr. early last year about buying a boat (2007 leftover) and tried to get him to beat a price from another dealer (for the 2008 model) which would have been a reduction of about $500. He declined and I see the boat just sold for $3000 less than when we talked. We trailer a boat and always stop in town to gas up just so we can avoid Brown's always high prices. Last year they were higher than most marinas but the difference wasn't that much more that I'd run across to Channel Marine to fill up when we were there on vacation.

$2.00 per gallon more just to use up last season's supply is insulting to their loyal customers who don't have the option of filling up in town.

robmac 05-02-2009 09:16 AM

Well I know for sure if I had paid 4.00 a gallon to put the fuel in my tank for sale common sense tells me it isn't a sound business decision to then sell it for 2.00 a gallon. Just my opinion as a business person myself.

rick35 05-02-2009 10:36 AM

You could do that but you would run the risk of alienating your customers. If that's a chance you're willing to take all I can say is good luck. Personally its not a risk I would be willing to take even if business was good (and its not). The marinas on the north end of the lake have a captive customer base and you can get higher prices. I just think $2 more is too much.

Bear Island South 05-02-2009 03:43 PM

I saw a tanker truck at Sheps today at 2pm, the price should be coming down.

Bear Island South 05-03-2009 09:59 PM

$2.49 per gallon at 6pm tonight

VtSteve 05-09-2009 06:18 AM

Marinas don't have the normal fuel supply chain that the stations on the roads do. I know the guy here has to do the same thing, use last year's supply. Gas had hit $5 at one point on the lake, have no idea what it is now.

I'm not looking forward to ethanol either, but it will be here some time. Older boats in particular need to be careful. What I plan to do if we get it, is keep a couple of the special filters on board, and keep the tank topped off during the week.

Paid $2.309 at Lakeport on Thursday.

I believe it was $2.59/gal on Sat 5/9/09.

Price Comparisons

I've found that more often than not the lowest prices on the lake over the boating season tend to be at either Lakeport Landing or Channel Marine (who has the lowest prices fluctuates back and forth). I'll probably be buying most of my gas from Channel Marine due to the ValvTec. It will be much less of a hassle for me than having to mix my own (I tend to be a fumble thumbs when it comes to putting additives into the tank, so why tempt fate?).

eillac@dow 05-25-2009 06:01 AM

Any gas at Pier 19 yet?

Does anyone know if Pier 19 has gas yet? We opened last weekend and took a float boat ride over and figured we would fill it up, only to find out they had no gas. We were told they probably would not have gas until Memorial Day or later. Was not able to make it to the lake this weekend, but plan on heading up next weekend.

Was just curious if they had gas yet?

Thank you.

Don...maybe we can get this going again?
Just rename it "2009".
No comments...just a quick glance at where and how much. Very useful.

lakeport is 2.72 this weekend..they are also treating their gas to get rid of all the preventable affects of ethonal on a boat.

Sheps

The gas attendant at Sheps yesterday told me they were going to start putting ethanol stabiler additives in their tanks also. I welcome that!! Sorry, but forgot what I paid!

KTO 06-02-2009 08:16 PM

Got gas at Shep Browns today. It was 2.69 but the guy told me it was going up 60 cents tomorrow.

So as of 6/3/09 their price is 3.29 per gallon.

If I was allowed to comment on this, I'd say that's ridiculous. Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to comment, so I won't share my opinion on this.

Andrews Marine in Minge Cove: $3.09 on June 6th

We stopped in at 7:30 PM or so last night. Although the sign said they had closed at 6PM, they came out and filled us up anyway. Very nice people; I like this place!

OCDACTIVE 06-07-2009 07:49 PM

anyone know what octane these marinas are selling? and cost?

hancoveguy 06-08-2009 03:39 AM

Octane levels and how to tell

Ambrose cove 6/6/09 $3.04.

From a professional gas hauler...
Look at the 12" tank covers on the ground near the tanks away from the pumps.
Colors are universal- look at any gas station, anywhere.
White= Regular 87 oct
Blue (most common for boats) = midgrade 89 oct
Red = Super 92 or higher oct
Yellow is always diesel
Orange is just a vapor recovery

I did notice Blue (89 midgrade) is very common.
Also, 90% of the lakes region gas comes from Portland Maine but Boston drivers can deliver from Boston in a pinch.

AC2717 06-08-2009 06:52 AM

Lakeport

Lakeport Marina was $2.80 on Saturday Morning.

Most marina's, I think if I recall correctly, all use 89 octane and then some have diesel

OCDACTIVE 06-08-2009 07:37 AM

I need 91 octane or higher.. anyone know what marina and cost?

I could. But not the best idea from what I read. Best to get it at the octane you need so not to over or under do it.

3.48/gal posted on the pump at Squam Boat Livery on Squam Lake in Holderness.

Bet they do not sell much gas as most Squam boats are smaller and run on a six gal portable tank, which probably gets lugged to the nearby Citgo. You all know about rich folks....the richer they get....the tighter they get.

Having a place on Squam should probably not be used as an expample to support your theory of saving money. For me, I was a hell of a lot cheaper when I was 20 and did not have the money to consider being extravagant with.

The last two posts might be a good sign for boating...ROAD Gas in RI has been running $2.62..$2.67 this past week and pretty stable for 87 Octane. Boat Gas cheaper than Road Gas..?? It also might be an indication that Boat Gas sales is very slow....

$3.099 on Saturday up from $2.999 on Friday. Was interesting to see Cumby's in Meredith selling regular on Thursday for $2.389.
