need suggestions for driving day trip around the lake....

Hello Everyone, I am taking my family for a day trip around Lake Winnipesaukee this week. Can any of you suggest stops for; the kids, shopping for adults, nice places to walk, scenic stops and so on...family of four. Thanks in advance!!!!

Island Girl 04-27-2009 04:21 PM

Moultonboro Country Store

... and buy the chocolate covered wintergreen mint patties.

In my opinion wolfeboro is the nicest spot on the lake for shopping and what not. Plenty of ice cream places for the kids, and blacks gift shop is also a nice place to check out. As for places to walk or go down by the water I'd say Levitt Beach off route 25 in meredith. There are some walking trails and a nice beach. My place is right down the road so i walk the dog down their for a morning swim at the canoe launch. Hope that helps!

Here you go

The Yum Yum Shop in Wolfboro
Obviously the Weirs Beach Boardwalk area
Mini Golf in Alton
Shops at Mills Falls in Meredith
Couple of shopping places in Center Harbor

I like to just drive around and explore different roads and places
we try to stop at different places every time we go around

That is what we like the best, no plans, just drive and stop if we want

If you like antique cars, keep your eyes open in Melvin Village.

Locke Hill Trail

Quick and fun hike with stone furniture to check out great Lake views.

On the other side of Lake is the Abenaki Tower. Very short walk up to Tower that you can climb up and get great lake views.

Have fun!

Fun things during a drive around the lake

My kids are always open to a few hours of video games at Funspot on Route 3. This is convenient fun on a rainy day. If you are not waist conscious, you could also make your own sundae at Kellerhaus down the road towards Weirs Beach.

BTW, I'll second the recommendation for the Moutonboro Country Store.

Lakesrider 04-28-2009 06:49 AM

You could stop at the http://www.kellerhaus.com/tradition.htm in Merideth, for ice cream.

Mmmmmmmm.....Ice Cream!

Wolfeboro is good. The Wright Museum is there, Don't know if the Clickity Clack railroad would be open, Take them for a ride down RT 109. Just like going on an amusement park ride.....:D

It's too bad thing like the Hobo railroad don't open earlier for the school vacation weeks....

If you wait til MAy 1st the Squam Lake Nature Center opens on that day. One of my favorites....

Squam Lake

If you want to adventure North of Lake Winnie, go to West Rattlesnake Mtn. on Squam Lake. 1/2 or so walk(not very hard) to spectacular views. Bring a back pack for picnic. Directions are Rt 25 North to Holderness, right onto Rt113, 3 or 4 miles on the right is a brown sign in a valley. Can get there from Sandwich which Rt113 goes into.

Enjoy.

Check off season schedules

Although some of the suggestions like the Yum Yum shoppe and the Alton Bay mini golf are good ones for the family, these may not yet be open for the season. The mini golf may only be open on the weekend this time of year. I would definitely agree with Island Girl and go to the Moultonborough Country store -- something for everyone! The Kellerhaus for ice cream is also another good suggestion. The Science Center in Holderness (just off Rt. 3/113 intersection is also good for kids, but again check their hours -- they open May 1).

A walk along the backbay in Wolfeboro over to Lake Wenworth is also nice in good weather.

Weirs beach (a bit "honky-tonk" but the kids will like it) and Meredith. :D

Covered bridges

Go see a covered bridge. How about Ashland, off Rt. 3. Take Rt 3 North out of Merideth.

Also, check this site. There are lots of suggestions, including tours. Don't take the tours, of course -- but they provide details and describe what they do -- you can simply take off from their suggestions.

sawyers_point_girl 04-29-2009 08:52 AM

Is Castle in the Clouds open this time of year? Fun for the kids (and adults!) :)

LadyJane 04-29-2009 09:51 AM

Abenaki Tower

Just south of Melvin Village watch for a little sign for "Abenaki Tower". Park your car there and take the short walk to the tower. The view from the top is super !!!

Why not just "wing it", and stop at whatever place grabs your attention? Sometimes those are the best days! (I used to be a "planner", and have learned I missed a lot along the way.......... :emb::D

Lakesrider 04-30-2009 06:49 AM

I'm with Waterbaby on that one too. However kids today get so preoccupied with Nintendo, Car media centers, cell phones, texting, it is so hard to distract them with something non-electronic like a view, or wildlife. Sad. It is why I like to ride my motorcycle. Nothing but the wind and lots of viewing...And watching out for deer....

glennsteely 04-30-2009 11:05 AM

it's all good...

The whole area is just stunningly beautiful, stop everywhere, see everything, say Hi to the lake for me....we are coming soon.

mcdude 04-30-2009 12:30 PM

Glenn Steely....where have you been? It's been three years since your last post!! (see THIS THREAD )

mets3007 04-30-2009 01:46 PM

Weirs and Meredith

I agree with the Weirs Beach, Meredith idea yes its old fashioned at Weirs but I have been going almost every year ( skipped last season) and im not no kid (28) and I love going to Weirs every year. At the Weirs you have trains, 3 boat rides to chose from , 2 arcades and mini golf as well so yes the kids and the kid at heart will enjoy it. Meredith has Mills Falls, Town Docks, Heskey Park and also Main Street has nice shops as well.

Stuff an Animal

Don't forget Animaland at Winnis Woods, on the Winnipesaukee Pier where you can stuff and dress your own animal. It is just like Build a Bear (only better)

Yes this is a shameless plug from one of the owners:emb::emb:

SIKSUKR 04-30-2009 02:16 PM

You were never banned. If you had trouble posting you should have contacted me.

In over 10 years operating the forum only 2 people have been completely banned and it wasn't for sports talk.

glennsteely 05-02-2009 09:22 PM

my mistake...

I tried to post several times and everytime it said that it was waiting for your approval, Don. None of the posts ever made it onto the forum, so I just guessed I was banned. Anyhoo, I am glad to be here. Overjoyed in fact.
