"CONCORD - On the eve of the annual drawdown of the lakes, the Winnipesaukee River Watershed Advisory Committee has begun reconsidering the parameters by which the Dam Bureau of the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) manages water levels in the chain of lakes along the river in an effort to reconcile the diverse interests in the watershed."

"In general, water is stored during the summer to provide recreational opportunities and released in the autumn to serve the needs of the hydroelectric industry and create capacity to capture rain and runoff in the spring. When rainfall or run-off are unusally heavy, as occurred last October and again in May, DES is challenged to balance the high level of Lake Winnpesaukee and the heavy lows downstream, both of which cause signifigant damage."
