Tree debris from roadside utility clearing

We're in Meredith where there's been a lot of tree removal in our neighborhood to clear along roadway utility ROWs. One medium size hemlock tree was removed from our frontage; it's now on the ground cut into 2 ft pieces. I know that it's my responsibility to do what I want with the wood.

We have a small lot with minimal room to stack it...plus I have no desire to look at it each day as it rots over the next 20 years. Being pine, I don't think anyone wants to burn it except maybe for campfires. I just want it to be gone whether it's me disposing it somewhere that accepts it, paying someone to haul it away, or otherwise.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of it? Thanks.

We had the same problem and the limbs were huge! Way too big for us to move. So I thought we have nothing to lose and put a free sign on it to see if anybody wanted it for campfire wood and guess what, It's gone!! So try it, you might be surprised.

I second Tis, Craigs list or FB Market place, "free bon fire wood" and it will be gone. This time of year a bunch of people are looking for that.

Hemlock or Pine?

Red Pine is sought after by craftsmen for wood projects. White pine is sought after by flatlanders for outdoor campfires. Both have needles 3-4 inches long. Red Pine grow needles in clusters of three.

Both should find a home with "free". :)

Hemlock has needles less than a half-inch long and and not good for much.

I cut them into lengths that fit my wood stove, and for the next couple of years, become the last log put in the wood stove for the night. By morning, there is still enough heat and the embers are glowing enough to refresh a fire quickly.

Otherwise, if you have a soggy spot on your lot, roll them into it, and "grow" Red-Stripe Salamanders!

:look:

They did our neighborhood in the spring and left downed trees everywhere, most are gone already. I agree, put free on the pile and hopefully will be gone.

Power company left me a huge mess. Took down a 24” pine and left logs too big to move and enough slash too fill a 10 wheeler. It’s in a deep valley by a brook next to the house that can’t be reached with any equipment so there it sits….total eyesore

Was it Eversource? Tree crews have been cutting down trees in Merrimack and leaving the logs behind for another crew to remove. There have been logs in the front yard of one of our neighbors all summer. They should have coordinated both crews to cut and remove promptly.

Since when do they remove?
The trees and limbs belong to the landowner, and I have never gotten Eversource to remove anything of size... or to even take down trees that would be a future menace.

That's interesting. Another neighbor has been talking to Eversource and they said they would cut and remove. Just didn't say when.

I always like to hear how things worked out

So, I figured I ought to practice what I preach.

I started with the free wood sign but after a few days and no bites (we are in a low-traffic neighborhood) I posted Free Bon Fire Wood on Facebook Marketplace just as chachee52 suggested. Over three weeks, I got three calls and the wood is gone.

Thanks chachee and all others for your suggestions.

When I managed a lake property for friends, I would stack wood by the street. One time I didn't get around to putting up a sign. The wood was still there at my Thanksgiving checkup but gone by Christmas!
