19 Mile bay- a great day for a swim!

I heard this one had 300 miles on it...

Grant 02-14-2006 11:47 AM

Location?

Is this the truck over near Whortleberry? The one with the plow? Tom at Dive Winni said it's been tough bringing it up because of the added weight and the thin ice. New truck...what a drag.

Gas and Oil Slick...

The image shows the gas/oil slick...On the small part of open water, makes you wonder what is being taken away by the current. What a shame...:(

Pepper 02-14-2006 12:47 PM

Why????????????

That was the first thing I noticed also! :fire:

I have a hard time mustering up any sympathy for someone stupid enough to take a truck out on the lake right now.:rolleye1:

Someone please tell me there's a fine levied to the operator. Who's responsible for cleaning up the contamination?

Lakegeezer 02-14-2006 12:50 PM

Good poster for this weekend

Great shot! This should be put on a sign at the more popular drive-on spots for the lake this weekend. There are bound to be many safe spots on the lake for trucks to drive, but its not like other years.

Weirs guy 02-14-2006 01:14 PM

Pepper, someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe besides the "small" fee for the tow trucks and divers to get your truck/sled/4-wheeler out of the water there is also a daily fine for parking in the water.

We should start a pool right now to bet how many people go through the ice this weekend.

tricia1218 02-14-2006 02:16 PM

I am just curious, how far off shore this truck was when it went through? Also it seems to have taken a little bit to go completely down, I am guessing by the boards and chain?

gtxrider 02-14-2006 02:39 PM

question

Does it have a HEMI in it? :rolleye2: I had to ask since it is a Dodge. Why would you take a big truck out on the ice?

Grant 02-14-2006 02:55 PM

Heck, there was a camper parked out on 19 Mile Bay on Sunday morning.

I got the picture from a friend, he did say that it had a plow on it and the plow is probably what kept it from going completely down. I believe that the plow is wedged into the bottom. What a genius...I am skeptical to take a sled anywhere on the lake this year nonetheless a full size truck!!!

Woodsy 02-15-2006 08:49 AM

You just can't fix stupid! All of the thin ice warnings and someone still drives a truck out on the ice...

On the upside, judging by the oil slick there isn't anymore gas in the water than normally spewed into the lake by an older 2 stroke outboard or PWC. Hopefully they can get that cleaned up ASAP!

Another truck went through in Wolfeboro bay this past weekend....with a camper attached.

Lakewinniboater 02-15-2006 04:59 PM

Alright now

that is just being a complete MORON! A full sized truck WITH a camper on thin ice. Geez....

Windrider 02-15-2006 05:10 PM

Gee, you'd think that the local papers would have news and warnings about thin ice wouldn't you??

Takes a long time to dry them out once they've been under like that. Still making payments and a big one to the tow man.

secondcurve 02-15-2006 06:47 PM

Does anyone really think the local papers need to tell folks that it is warm and as a result they should keep their trucks off the ice? I have a feeling Darwin is going to strike this weekend.

Am I the only one who can no longer see the photo that started this thread? Was it removed for a reason or just a problem on my end?

Thanks

Paugus Bay Resident 02-16-2006 08:20 AM

I can see it OK

Woodsy 02-16-2006 08:25 AM

The Thin Ice Warnings have been all over the internet, newspapers and the radio... of course common sense should tell you that. Especially when you can see all of the open water, and you know how warm its been!

You just can't fix stupid!

Besides, if they advertise the ice is dangerous it will impact this weekends derby turnout. I hope everyone coming up is ready to do some walking.

I hope they can swim as well as walk:eek:

Mr. V 02-16-2006 03:43 PM

I hope the event organizers have deep pockets and liability insurance.

Windrider 02-16-2006 04:55 PM

My comment of yesterday reagrding the news media was intended to be dripping sarcasm....one needs to be on another planet to live here and not understand the ice conditions. I think I'll bring my lawn chair to the town docks tomorrow and watch human nature in action.

19MileBaylover 02-16-2006 10:27 PM

My guess: Right near the graveyard -- where it belongs. Careful skiing this summer.

It's there. If you're on dial-up, as I am, patience helps.

Weirs guy 02-17-2006 07:08 AM

I think this weekend will be a good time to go sit on the beach and teach my kids how Darwin works. I'm actually hoping to end up "finding" a four wheeler and some tip ups this spring!:rolleye1:

Stupid........

One of my favorite sayings applies here........ "God must love stupid people because he made so many of them"......... unbelieveable!

Derby Should Have Been Postponed Longer?

The ice seems more treacherous this weekend than last. The open water between Weirs and Meredith Neck is much larger in area today than a week ago. This current warm spell was in the long range weather forecast that was available almost two weeks ago . . . seems like a further postponement of the Derby would have been reasonable . . .

Weirs guy 02-27-2006 12:11 PM

This is a pretty interesting article that mentions our little "fish trap" here, explains what the planks under it are for, and mentiones it broke thru 9 times trying to get it out!
