Block Ice
 

Does anyone know where I can buy some blocks of ice instead of bags in the Meredith or Laconia area? I used to get mine at the Meredith Center Store but they are closed now. I can drive around to a few stores but thought someone here might know who definitely carries them.

Laconia Ice delivers/supplies bagged ice cubes and ice blocks to local stores. Call them. If they won't sell to you directly, they should point you to a local store that will.

I often will make my own blocks of ice. Back when we drank more milk than we do now, we had took half gallons and filled them with water and froze them. After we cut way down on our milk consumption, we simply took quart size zip bags, filled them and froze them.

Also have friends who take meatloaf tins, line them with plastic wrap, freeze them, and then put the pans in warm water for a short period to unmold them.

Having an upright freezer helps ;).

Of course, you can always call Laconia Ice and see who is selling blocks of ice... oh, that was already suggested. :cool::eek::laugh:

What would blocks be used for instead of cubes??? :confused:

I use blocks in my bait cooler during spring fishing to keep it lively. Smelt survive best in extremely cold water. I make my own block ice however with gallon size zip lock freezer bags...

They provide a great foundation to keeping your drinks cool. The bagged ice melts faster and the block keep that melted water cold and also last longer. I use both for long term (entire weekend) cooler usage.

Here's something else we do...
 

We will by two (or 3) bags of ice cubes. We will keep one in the bag, and then open the other (s) and dump them out as cubes. The unopened bag acts like a block, though it will not last quite as long, but lasts longer than cubes lying loose in the cooler.
