Loons Are Nesting

We have two loon pairs that are nesting in our area of the lake. The loon preservation committee have placed the loon nesting signs in the nesting area. The young hatch after an incubation period of 26-31 days and begin to swim almost at once. They will start swimming around the 4th of July. This is one of the busiest weekend for boats on the lake. We will be keeping an eye on them and try to keep them safe.

Here is a picture of an adult with a chick right behind her. According to some folks who maintain the floating nest for the loons, there is also one egg left on the nest. Mama leaves the nest on occasion, which, they tell me, is normal. Hope it hatches soon. This chick hatched either Saturday or Sunday.

Just a caution: please, please do not approach the loons and their nesting area. We are anchored about a hundred yards from the nesting area. The loons swam to us. Of course, we don't frighten them away with loud music, and try not to make sudden movements to frighten them.

Here's the picture, taken on my phone.
