2014 Hummingbirds

I always use Mother's Day as the date that the Hummingbirds appear.

Doing my best to bring on the summer, I have put my Hummingbird feeder out by our front window. It appears that I have beat the birds this year. I fear that the first arrivals will be a little late due to the cold weather this spring.

Anyone seen any Hummingbirds yet this year?

We had our first passer through this afternoon up here on the mountain.:)

My husband put out the feeders over the weekend..we'll see:)

Made some food yesterday and the feeders are cleaning/soaking today. I'll throw the feeders up tonight. They showed up at my place on 5/12 last year and 5/5 the year before.

Put mine out at the cottage this weekend. I'm not there to see what's happening at the bay.

minni on winni 05-07-2014 06:16 PM

Saw our first one yesterday at the feeder (around 230pm) here on meredith bay:D

No Hummers yet...but...

I did have a goldfinch land on the feeder, and check it out...twice.

Probably thinks the homeowner is a nut...not far wrong, I know. :rolleye1:

Showed up at my place in Meredith yesterday evening. Several sightings yesterday evening and this morning.

Smart Bird the goldfinch! LOL

Had our first Hummingbird today.

Just looked out the window and saw the little rascal. So cute with its turtleneck sweater and fleece vest. It came well equipped for our NH spring weather. :(

Let the fun begin. Love watching the little darlings.

We always have some outside our house every season...did not see any this weekend and we had the feeder out. Hoping to actually get a decent picture of one this year !

They made it to our house

We put one feeder out late yesterday afternoon & saw our first visitor today. He's a little shy, but it won't take long for him to get used to us. We have another feeder, but last year no matter how far apart we placed them, the hummers would fight over the same one. Territorial little buggers! So this year I think I'll only hang one. That way we'll always have a clean one ready to go. (We've noticed they're also a bit impatient).

Showed up a few days ago..

We're Ready

Last Friday, we opened our cottage on East Bear Island to begin our 47th season at this great location which has been a big part of our lives. We put out our hummingbird feeder on the first day, and are looking forward to the first visitor. There are no blooming flowers anywhere on the island so far. There is a new robin's nest on a beam on the underside of our porch roof.

Greene's Basin Girl 05-15-2014 02:24 AM

We have our hummingbirds. I have to get the feeders out ( I am very late this year ).

znh 05-16-2014 11:46 AM

Saw this last night on TV...could be pretty cool. Wonder how long it would take our local hummingbirds to use it...

Welcome Tiny Travelers

We saw the first hummingbirds of the season at our feeder on East Bear Island. The feeder hangs below the porch soffit. The hummer was enjoying a tasty sip while rain poured nearby off the roof. It stayed over five minutes or more on each visit at this sheltered location.

Sorry, but I got to say that is just sick.

This male is very territorial. He sits all day and protects "his" feeder.

What feeder & recipe do you use?

Hi everyone!
This our 2nd year at our cottage on the lake in Alton bay. This year I have seen several humming birds around the house and yard. I would like to get a feeder and I'm wondering what you have had success with as far as feeders, locations & food. Thanks for the great info on this board!
Cheers
Kim

Good success. Just a basic feeder available anywhere for $10 or so. Make your own food...4 parts water, 1 part sugar. Boil the water and stir the sugar in until dissolved. You can use red food color or not. I use it cuz it is pretty :) .

Don't forget to boil the water/sugar.

Just a note from Alton Mountain. We have not seen a male hummer for the past 3 or 4 days, just the young females and they are tanking up.
Just thought you might be interested.:)

Do they usually head south mid september from this area? Seeing more bees than hummers at the feeders lately:(

Winterharborway 09-01-2014 05:27 PM

Past 2 weekends the yellow jackets have been inside my feeders. Some times the humming bird will stick his beak in for a drink and will have to back off to let the bee's out
