Eagle ???

Took this on Berry Bay on the Ossippees Friday 1/4/13.

The picture isn't that great as it was a fast point and shoot. But from the birds features it looks like a young Bald eagle.

What do you folks think?

Yes the young bald eagles are all brown from the ones I saw this past summer.

Head doesn't turn white until they're 5 years old.

Goldens are heavier...

Ospreys always flash a white side profile.

A young Bald Eagle can be confused with an adult Golden Eagle.

Which-is-which can be done, but your research is insufficient. ;)

You have to weigh them!

Talon color

In the original photo the orange color of the talons suggests an Eagle although the talons can widely vary in color from light yellow to light orange. Ospreys have white talons so I think we can rule them out. Golden Eagles tend to be consistent in talon color which is yellow. Like APS said catch it and weigh it.

Aren't Ospreys migratory ?

Yes they are. They winter in the southern states and in South America.

After looking at a few "bird books", mainly looking at wing shape, my guess is a Fledging Bald Eagle. Hard to be sure without knowing the size of the bird, but the bend in the forward part of the wing is more Bald Eagle like than the straighter forward part of a Golden Eagles wing.

Again, this is an opinion and nothing I would bet the farm on.

Thanks

Thanks Folks,

I was leaning toward the Bald Eagle but wasn't sure. After looking at more bird books it does appear to be a young Bald Eagle. And some of the post here seem to agree.
