My rule #1 is to always check the weather forecast. These can be wrong but it's scarey how many people will start up Mt Washington just because it's sunny when they leave the base, completely ignorant that a different weather front is expected before they could possibly complete the trip, and the conditions will turn bad.

Hikers unprepared??? come on you must be kidding.....

Alright seriously now, My departed brother worked for the US forest service for over 20 years. The stories I have heard about ill prepared hikers are numerous.
Most all of them could have been prevented with common sense. Unfortunately in this day and age, perceived personal enjoyment, comes before common sense.

Last I doubt there are anymore stranded ill prepared hikers this year then any other year..... the warm weather has just made the situation happen earlier in the year.

You are so right about this one. Check the cause of death on people who have died on Mt. Washington. Exposure to the weather, hypothermia is the number 2 reason. Falling is the number 1.

One of our last hikes up the Mt. my son and I left a warm sunny base to a summit that was in and out of clouds. We ate our lunch inside then when we came out the fog had gotten so thick you couldn’t see 30ft in front of yourself. We had to follow the Cog railway down to the last trail crossing just to locate the trail, and then as we descended the fog got thinner and eventually disappeared.
We always included a poncho, change of cloths and trail mix to our packs along with the emergency kit.
You can’t always carry everything but there are a few items you should never be without.
Oh and hiking in sandals is not a good idea as well.
