Centre Harbor Bathhouse

1 Attachment(s)
You can see it on the left side of the Mount Cam picture now that she is docked in Centre Harbor. Those of you that have attended the last two forums fests have seen it. It's the small brick building on the water's edge and is known as the bathhouse. Does anyone know what's inside and its history?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say there is a bath inside.:laugh:I believe it was a changing room with some bath facilities.I think they shut it down when they caught George Michael in there.

Center Harbor

I thought the brick building on the town beach was called the "boat house", not bath house. I've seen the lifeguards using that building. Perhaps they store their equipment and swim lines in there during the off season.

Restrooms and Storage

I don't think he is asking about the restroom building

the restrooms are in the block building up by the picnic tables. the original poster is asking about the brick building to the right of the beach (facing the lake)

I believe it is a Lifeboat House. There is a ramp going down to the water.

Thank you all, but I can't find any history as to its contruction or original purpose. Please try harder to find information. Thank you.:)

Back in the day, a small group of transplanted scandanavians built that bath house for their wood stove heated sauna. Used to be, it was not uncommon to see the locals venturing out from that hot sauna, out onto the ice, and take the plunge through a big hole cut into the icy cold water, and then hopping back into the sauna. It used to be a Centre Harbor tradition, and not a bad way to ward off those winter time blahs.......;)

I think FLL "tried" too hard.

Brick Building

I believe you will find that was built as part of the Dane Estate, used to house small boats.

Thanks WBB. The Dane connection gives me another avenue to investigate.:)

I believe WeirsBeachBoater has it fairly correct. I have been around the area for 45 years and thats pretty much what I recall about the boathouse's history. I think the town of Center Harbor use's it now.

Another Bathouse

This thread reminds me of another bath house I used to walk past all the time when I was quite young in York Beach before the sea wall was built on Long Sands. Everyone's driveway was once behind their houses on Long Sands and at the end of Railroad Avenue just before the ballfield there was a bath house. I never used it but it's still there, surrounded by trees. The new bath house is right on the beach where it should have been in the first place.

I'll bet most people don't even know there's a road behind all those beach houses, but that was the shortcut when Long Beach Ave. was too busy.
