Calm Before The Storm

With Hurricane Irene fast approaching New Hampshire, we were treated to a beautiful sunset this evening.

Whole lotta hype

I don’t expect much more than a prolonged thunder storm event for our area.
Now that is pretty much what the forecast is saying. Some high wind gusts with lots of rain. Most locals I’ve talked with in the Laconia area were saying the same thing 2 days ago. We noticed a lot of boats pulled on Winnisquam last evening. But that lake has risen a foot as a result of the draining of Winni...

irene is rocking us on the south coast of rhode island

last report i got is she is losing steam but we have been getting hammered since the early a.m. - evacs were mandatory at 6 a.m. after that you were on your own - a few of us are riding it out on our island, with tide receding now i feel better - earlier you could have surfed in my yard.

i have uploaded some videos to youtube and will keep uploading until we loose power - its flickering now - wind has come around from the east southeast to south southwest. was outside caulikng a slider during a break in the rain and the wind actually pushed me along the deck while i was standing on a milkcrate! video is on youtube under TheMakoSharker

the biggest problem with this event is the shear size of the system it is going to hang around for hours, that is what you need to watch out for up there the longer it hangs the more things go wrong. we have a big willow tree behind the shop in alton and i hope it holds firm!

good luck all

We got hit hard, thank heaven for the generator and the shop vac. No major damage just a pain in the butt, but you can't mess with Mother Nature.

Wind in Your Neck of the Woods

Beautiful picture!

DRH, what were your winds like in West Alton. I recall you have a weather station?

Thanks for the picture comment, RG.

During the day yesterday the wind shifted from NE to E and then to SE by early evening. The wind during most of the day averaged around 15 - 20 mph, and we didn't get many strong gusts. However, other sections of Alton and the surrounding towns were not so lucky, as there were many trees and limbs down which caused damage and power outages. Those areas evidently experienced much stronger wind gusts than we did. Our power went out at 11:30 yesterday morning and didn't come back on until around 10:30 this morning.

However, as the eye of the storm moved northward and the wind shifted into the south here, it really picked up and became very gusty here. Our weather station recorded a gust of 47 mph at 12:20 AM this morning.
