Meredith Properties

I heard a rumor recently (on 2 different occasions) that Rusty has, or is in the works to, sell his properties in Meredith.

Anyone hear anything about this?

Please note I said RUMOR. I have NO idea if there is any truth to this.

Funny -- I heard the same RUMOR while at Lago last Saturday night sitting at the bar !!

Why would it matter?

A little background on his contributions to Meredith.

Whatever his current ownership stake is today hopefully if he does divest whoever takes his place keeps his vision alive. No argument the transformation of the town from the development of Mills Falls, Church Landing and Bay Point have left a positive mark for the town as a whole.

I agree Rusty has been an invaluable asset to revitalizing downtown Meredith and will be greatly missed if in fact he has decided to move on.

Of course he has to have an exit strategy, and where he is in his 70's this would not be a surprise. IF he does sell, hopefully his vision and theme are kept in tact. My big concern would be a large corporation buying this package. Rusty, if you are reading this...Thank you for making Meredith so great!!!!

Yes

It is true, not a rumor. Closing is in a couple of months.

I am hoping it is someone who has a vested interest in the area and continues with Rustys vision to improve our beautiful Lakes Region.

Sold: Done Deal

From the Laconia Sun:

McLear said the sale involved properties, including Church Landing, Inn at Mill Falls, Bay Point at Mills Falls, Chase House, Bay Point and Mill Falls Marketplace, that have a combined assessment of about $25 million, and the sale price “was well north of that.”

Before Rusty.....Meredith had the appearance of a typical tired NH mill town and he changed all that.An amazing man.

As I understand it, what is now the parking lot at the Mills Falls Marketplace and Hotel, close to the big intersection there, were two very ugly factory buildings, built with cinder blocks construction, that manufactured asbestos shingles used for residential siding on homes. Driving around Laconia, it is easy to spot homes sided with asbestos shingles, but not so much in Meredith?

www.asbestos.com/companies/amatex-corporation/ One paragraph down the bottom mentions Meredith, and manufacturing with asbestos into the late 1970's.

Anyone from around here still alive that worked there .... cough, cough, pained cough, relief wheeze?

https://www.alfiekohn.org/article/fo...orgive-tragic/ ... April 1986: talks about Meredith fighting for air and dying from lung asbestosis or mesothelioma .... next time you are stopped at the traffic lights there ...... roll down the window, take a long deep breath .... and think about those people working there and inhaling that asbestos dust ...

"The perfect place to open up (or buy) an asbestos plant."

"This means that workers will be dying excruciating deaths from their exposure to asbestos in Meredith until at least the year 2000."

"When Amatex closed it down in late 1982, a local developer turned it into a stylish shopping mall, Mills Falls Marketplace."

"A visitor would have no idea what used to go on there - and a resident is unlikely to tell him."

Agreed. I just hope the conglomerate doesn't lose sight of the NH feel. That's what I most appreciate about the current state of downtown and the rest stops.

Congratulations, Rusty! It's great to see someone earn a lot for performing a great service to the community

Truly hoped it was a smaller company or individual with the same passion and conviction for the area as Rusty has had. Hopefully this company can manage to protect their investment and keep the charm. He changed Meredith to a beautiful destination while helping the local economy grow.

One of my late in-laws worked at the asbestos mill in Meredith. She lived into her eighties, but the idea of her exposure to asbestos continues to be discussed. Probably water over the dam at his point.

Windham College- Lots of young hippies "indulged" themselves at this place back in the day! They were known to have the Hog Farmers, from California, host large, outdoor tenting weekends, cooking tons of food in big galvy garbage cans (think Wavvy Gravvy- Woodstock spokesman-"It's really gonna hurt!"). Bands on the roofs of buildings, with the beautiful people walking around enjoying the sweet country air ("With flowers in their hair"!). Yes, there were many opportunities for young people to expand their minds, and think grandiose thoughts!
