Nolan's of Wolfeboro Taking Over at Sandy Point !

There is a sign at Sandy Point Restaurant indicating that Nolan's will be taking over the restaurant in 2016. I just called the restaurant in Wolfeboro and they confirmed that.

Great news for all of us who love great food and Nolan's !

GTO 11-10-2015 02:05 PM

2 sites?

Are they still keeping the one in Wolfeboro open?

I didn't ask but because Sandy Point has traditionally been a seasonal operation, I can only guess that Wolfeboro stays just as it is.

This may be a stupid question, but how can Chef Barry be cooking up his masterpieces in two places at once??

Probably the same way McDonalds is able to deliver consistent cheeseburgers at multiple locations.

Yes. They can fit 2-3 boats at the dock reserved for restaurant customers. I could tell business wasn't good this year as there were only a handful of times when there was a wait for docking. When the Damons ran the restaurant they had a dock valet & they would even provide a van to transport boaters to & from the public docks if the SP docks were full.

phoenix 11-16-2015 10:25 AM

We were on our annual visit by boat and had no problem getting one of the docks

Tell us about Nolan's. Some of us don't get over to Wolfeboro very often and haven't had the pleasure. Are they a seafood restaurant? Do they plan a king lobster program like the old Sandy Point had? I really miss Jean's King double stuffed gargantuan lobster dish. Biggest I've ever had anywhere!! :liplick:

No, Sumr, Nolans is more Italian. Their pizza is very popular. I can't imagine they will have the same menu at Sandy Point, but maybe they will-----????

upthesaukee 01-02-2016 05:56 PM

I have heard, but not first hand...

I have heard that when the restaurant is leased, there are certain meals (lobster especially) that must be kept on the menu.

These meals go back to the original Sandy Point under the Ouellette family, where Wally Damon learned his craft. To get the lease, you need to agree to do those food items. Certainly can add some of your own.

Something to do with people having been coming to Sandy Point for eons, expecting the same items on the menu that they have enjoyed for all those years.

Maybe ghfromaltonbay can weigh in on this...she has been going there for more than a few weeks, and knows the family to boot.

No pizza

The wolfeboro staff told me a few weeks ago there will be no pizza at Sandy Point.

Nolan's at Sandy Point

Maybe, just maybe, the Nolan's crew has been listening to the comments about Sandy Point and has come to the realization that the clientele who normally frequent Sandy Point would like to see a return to the "days of yore" and have their favorite lobster dishes available.

Now, I say with my tongue in my cheek, wouldn't it be a novel idea for a restaurant to actually listen to the wishes of is clientele.

Here, here, and more power to Nolan's. (And this from a customer who DOES NOT EAT any seafood!)

Rinkerguy 01-03-2016 11:52 AM

Rest assured that lobster and prime rib will be part of the menu. The clientel that have frequented Sandy Point Restaurant for years will not be disappointed. The Ouellette family has always maintained some control of the menu, albeit small.

We eat there often and are never disappointed. The food is consistently good and the staff is accommodating and cordial. I don't believe that they will have a wood fired oven in Alton but beyond that, I think we have to wait and see how it develops.

One thing I do know is that it is, in my opinion, foolhardy for a landlord to dictate menu items to a successful restauranteur. You can either dream about days of yore or get a rent check every month (esp. For more than one season).

I for one will be supporting their efforts regardless of the menu items as we do all our local restaurants. Hats off to Elacoya, JP China, Shibleys, the Moose and Ackerly's, Docksider, Pop's and now Nolans!

phoenix 01-03-2016 04:40 PM

we have as a group dined there every august for twenty years . Always had the baked stuff king lobster. they should have the menu they want but for our group we would only go with the lobster. Whatever they do hopefully they will be open so that there can be many reviews during the summer. I wish them well

Your not the only one who misses Karen & Barry's.

My wife and I were at Nolan's last Fall (not this Fall) on a quite Sunday Afternoon (4:30- 5:00). We were a little apprehensive as to how things would compare between what we had grown accustom to at K&B and Nolan's.

Barry was "COOKING"! I used to "LOVE HIS" Veal Marcela! The Veal Medallions and the Sauce were better than you could get in the "NORTH END". We were not disappointed. The same Veal Medallions and the same delicious Marcela Sauce! I used ask for a "SPOON" to get every last drop of the Marcela Sauce.:liplick::liplick::liplick::liplick::liplick :

My wife loved K&B's Egg Plant Parm as much as I loved the Veal.

Yesterday (Saturday) we decided to try Nolan's again.I could taste the Veal Marcela all day. We went down early and walked in at 4:30. It was busy but not too crowded.

We both ordered our favorites. As you may have noticed most of what I have said is in the "past tense". We were both very disappointed in the Veal and the Egg Plant.

Veal Marcela

The Marcela Sauce was lacking its' "RICHNESS". NO SPOON NEEDED!

The VEAL was not the thin medallion you could cut with a spoon. In their place was a "VEAL Steak". It was about a quarter inch thickness. It was tender though. But not the Taste my palette was anticipating.

After what is was told by the Hostess I may go back one more time, but it will be between Tuesday or Thursday?

Why? Well BARRY works Monday thru Friday preparing "THINGS" for the week.

Oh, we should have suspected something would go aerie when we got Garlic BALLS instead of the Parisian Bread Sticks we had ordered.

Still, all in all it beat the Italian Farm House by a mile.

seafood, steaks, italian at nolan's sandy point

hello everyone, its chef jarrod from nolan's brick oven bistro. I know everyone is curious about our plan of attack and menu. I have been working hard the past couple months on a menu that is fresh, fun and locally sourced products. our goal is to bring back some of your old favorites and mix it with our new favorites. The menu will consist of your bake stuffed lobsters, fresh seafood, a couple really nice cuts of steak, slow roasted prime rib and of course our italian dishes, unfortunately we will not be bringing our brick oven pizza. We thank you for your support. stay tuned.

ghfromaltonbay 02-03-2016 03:00 PM

Thanks, Chefjarrod

As a longtime Sandy Point resident (since 1959), I'm glad to hear that the restaurant sounds to be in good hands again. Let's hope you can restore the reputation that the Damons worked so hard to establish over the many years they ran the restaurant. We've missed the place and had been avoiding it the past 2-3 years.

phoenix 02-03-2016 09:45 PM

glad to hear the baked stuff king will still be on the menu. Looking forward to hearing more as you progress thru the summer

The town of Alton doesn't turn the water on for that stretch of Rt 11 until mid-April. Sandy Point then has to open & test their lines after that. In past years the Daemons used to open for weekends starting around Mothers' Day. The motel & cottages open May 1.

Can someone explain this a bit more? there are parts of Alton that only have seasonal water service? Is it just the property on the Point? If someone wants to change to year-round use, do they need to put in their own water service?

Alton Water Works, AKA Alton Town Water. Has lines that run from near the Central Fire Station on Rte 140, down the Letter S road, up to the "uptown area" of Alton then out to the Alton Circle and Hannafords McD, etc. Going the other way down to the bay, it splits by the Dockside Restaurant and goes out 28A to the vicinity of Dan Kelley Dr. . Following rte 11, it goes out rte 11 to about Boat Cove. It does provide water to ABCCC and up Rand Hill Rd to the back side of ABCCC.

With that being said, the water lines going out rte 11 are not buried deeply, with a notable problem with the Back Bay bridge crossing. Most of the houses along that section of rte 11 from the bay to Boat Cove will have wells as well.

If you wanted to connect to Town Water, and were in an area covered by Town Water, it would be prudent to make sure that you are connecting to an area that is available year round. Also, the system is old, close to 100 years. There are about 700 customers, and 55 fire hydrants served.

We were at Nolan's in Wolfeboro on Monday night. We were told that several of the staff members from there will be transferring to Alton, and that the opening will be May 18th.

So, in about 2 weeks.

Very impressed with the menu, lots to choose from at all price points!

We love Nolans in Wolfeboro, looking froward to welcoming them to our town.

No, there was no listing of who was going. Just a statement that several of the Wolfeboro staff would be transferring.

Has an opening date been announced?

upthesaukee 05-25-2016 05:18 AM

Tuesday after Memorial Day...

A friend whose daughter is training to be a waitress there said there was delay in getting some of the new furniture and that the opening has been pushed back to after Memorial Day.

I have seen several cars in front of the restaurant, so training and perhaps work inside seems to be ongoing. Sign is still advertising that they are looking for line cooks. this may also be adding to the delay.

Had Dinner Tonight !

Nolan's was great tonight.... Chicken Parm and Veal Piccata were right on and the bar area is wonderful. The structural changes that have been made really make a huge difference and allow water views from the bar area as well. High top tables in the lounge area are also a big bonus for larger parties who still want nice views.

Fantastic food and better service.... we wish them well and welcome them to the Alton restaurant scene !

NewHaHagirl 06-03-2016 01:44 PM

Just had a fabulous lunch at Nolan's Sandy Point! Yes, they are now open for lunch AND dinner until Columbus Day. Food and service was excellent as always! We live in Alton, so it's great they are just down the road. Yum!

Rinkerguy 06-03-2016 07:19 PM

Almost like old times

Went to dinner tonight at Nolans at Sandy Point, restaurant and pub were almost full. Food was fantastic, service was a little slow for my taste; but given they have only been open for four days I'll cut the kitchen a little slack. I commend them for not sacrificing food quality for speed. I'm sure the team will get up to speed in no time.

Highly recommend, and we will be back.:liplick:

Fjr05 06-07-2016 06:52 AM

I took my family for lunch at Nolans Sat and we had a fantastic meal and the service was training but attentive. Will definitely will go back.
