outboard motors

Looking at 2020 tritons, one has a 200 mercury and the other has a 150 Yamaha.
looking for opinions on either one, I read some where that yamaha has a great reputation for reliability, however it seems like I see more merc's on the lake.

Along my beach at camp, there are six Mercury 150s all between 5-9 years old, none of which have had the slightest hiccup. The 150 Yamaha in the group has also been great.

For me, it would absolutely be the higher HP of the two since they're both great machines.

My general observation over the years is that you tend to see more Mercury's on lakes/freshwater and more Yamaha's in salt water.

Most modern outboards are pretty darn reliable and you really can't go wrong with any particular brand although certain models by certain manufacturers over the years have been problematic.

I currently own a Yamaha, Suzuki, and small Honda. I like them all.

With that said, if given a choice I would go Yamaha (especially the F150). I am on my second boat with an F150. It's rock solid.

i would look at torque, and something to look at is one a 4 cylinder vs a 6. HP rating is a fickle number. I have seen 4 cylinders at 200hp and 6 with 200HP, some with charger on some with not. being 1 gear i always like to know the torque specs and all other performance specs. Usually the 4 cylinder does not out perform the 6 for obvious reasons, or if it is, its due to performance mods and other things that will change it efficiency and repair costs in the future

They both have a good reputation as being a reliable motor. I personally would choose the 200 Merc!
