Mount Chocorua
 

Hi Everyone

I recently hiked Mount Chocorua. We went up the Brook Trail and came down the Liberty trail.

It was a great/challenging hike. The views were spectacular!

Do you need reservations, or just show up and hope there's room? Is there a wood stove inside? How is the overall condition of the insides? How many bunks?

I assume you bring a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, food and a small stove. How were the mice, porcupines, black flies and mosquitos?

See that chain holding the cabin down? What, are they worried someone will steal the cabin, or something?

That chain is there to keep the cabin from blowing away. You can see them on all the cabins along the Appalachain trail in the White Mountains.

That is a Cool shot! We were wondering about snowmobiling up there.

That cabin is first come-first serve. You would need some type of mattress pad and sleeping bad for sure

NO fires are allowed.......

Don't know if it is legal to take a snowmobile there or not? Probably it depends if the Jim Liberty cabin is located in the White Mountain National Forest or in a state park or in a town park.

Many WMNF trails have a sign at their trail head that says something like: Foot travel only, motorized vehicles prohibited, violators fined $500. Got to wonder about taking a snowmobile up there? Anyone know? :cool:

Club Trail
 

The Liberty Trail is a Club Trail of the Ossipee Valley Snowmobile Club. As a matter of fact the current hiking trail is the old carriage trail that our club president cut out 30 some odd years ago. The year after he cut it the Forrest Service abandoned their trail and adopted the snowmobile trail as the hiking trail.

Oopsie.....my bad.....sorry about that....for suggesting that maybe taking a snomo up that high was a no-no. .........excuuuuuuuuse meeeeeeeeeee!

I tried doing that exact hike (Brook/Liberty) a few years ago. I am not an experienced hiker, and this was my only attempt to hike Chocorua to date. Unfortunately, it had rained heavily the day before and the trails were still very wet. I got as far as the cabin and gave up because the rock ledges near the cabin were very slick. The area in the photo above the cabin appears to be very rocky & steep and I had concerns about falling. I'd like to try hiking Chocorua again some day. Is there a less steep & rocky trail? How far is the cabin from the summit?

We went up the Brook trail and came down Liberty. Going up Brook is pretty challenging. Coming down Liberty was not as bad, but you need to try to do it when it has been dry fro a couple of days. Those slick rocks are tough!

It is about 1/2 mile to the summit from the Cabin.

Before I got a bum leg, I used to spend a few nights a year in that cabin. Very nice place. The "night walkers" like to shake the chains and wake up anyone already inside. Grrr!

Even though the rules say "NO Fires!" one of the rangers told me it was ok in the spot where he had built a fire ring. I would still suggest not making a fire there unless you have heard it directly yourself because I bet the fine is pretty stiff.

Check out the AMC maps -- Chocorua is fed by more trails than just about any other peak up there. Lots of options with a variety of vistas and terrain.
