What happens to the lake if Romney wins?

I don't want to start a political conversation here, just trying to understand the implications as it applies to the lake, if Romney becomes President. I'm sure he loves the lake, as do most all of us, and would probably want to continue to enjoy it with his family on occasion. Taking that as a given, what would be the impact to the "defensive zone" that most likely would be set up around the compound?

robmac 06-21-2011 08:16 AM

If you remember when he was Govenor he had a rope line that streched pretty far off shore. So I would say if elected that area would be totally off limits. JMHO

I don't think any new president will have a lot of time to vacation and kick back - they will be totally consumed trying to re-orient our country back to a jobs-based economy that they will be luck to leave the Oval office for lunch.

The white line in place when he was Massachusetts governor wasn't his doing, it was the security forces. The locals know him, and politely ignore him. Now I am not ignorant of the difference between being a governor and being president, so clearly there will have to be security measures in place.

It would be interesting, to say the least.

Grant 06-21-2011 08:28 AM

And diving Clark's Point would probably result in a life-changing encounter with a Navy Seal. Even if he becomes the nominee, say buh-bye to that dive site.

And can you imagine the Secret Service detail on a Sunday when President Romney heads to the church north of downtown? Main Street would be cordoned off, locked down, gridlocked and lined with black Suburbans filled with gun-toting dudes in armor.

And then there's the news media...satellite trucks, primping talking heads, traffic...

Just sayin'...

I'm more worried about Air Force One coming in over my boat into Laconia airport. Think they can land a 747 in there?

More likely they land in Boston and Marine One to Laconia.

If he makes the Wolfeboro house his "CAMP DAVID" then we could be in for some challenging summer moments. But, IMHO, any inconvenience in the Wolfeboro area would be worthwhile for the the value of having a business man running the country again .... :D

I used to work in an office at Pease. When Bush visited, he would fly in to Pease and they'd shut traffic down while the black SUVs and all the security escorts went by, then they'd head up 95.

K'port is 45 minute drive from Pease, Wolfeboro is about an hour. I'd bet they'd drive instead of the helicopter, probably with a rolling blockade up 16 and 11.

Between the security and the gawkers, it played major havoc with the traffic everywhere along the route.

It was a bit of a hassle when he was there. THey closed the whole road down so you couldn't go through. When he wasn't there it was fine.

jrc 06-21-2011 12:12 PM

OK I'm feeling better about him landing in Pease and going direct to Wolfeboro.

When the French President rented the house around the corner from Mitt, they shut down a favorite anchoring spot. So President Mitt is welcome, but he can't bring any friends.

If you click on this page it will show you the location of Romney's home. There is a red square around the property. I imagine the "red perimeter" will have to be enlarged if he is there as POTUS.

One day last summer he must have had some vip's up for lunch because there were 2 seaplanes taking turns landing in S Wolfeboro bay and taxing in to shore. I would say they landed about a dozen times coming in, and the same later around 5 o'clock leaving. Pretty cool.

I wonder if the neighbors could apply for a tax abatement due to lost usage from the security zone...or even sue Romney for lost property value. Security zones don't just go away after their subject is out of office...

Here's hoping it doesn't become an issue...for one reason or another.

That's a De Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver. Arguably the most well known and rugged bush plane ever. Single Pratt & Whitney Radial engine of 450 HP. Built from 1948 to 1969. Eight passengers including pilot. Still used extensively in Washington State/Puget Sound .. and Alaska. :) NB

It's always nice to hear about our own, here in Connecticut, Pratt & Whitney.:)

A seashore frontage in K'prt, ME has its own challenges, but there has to be more concern with line of sight to the compound in Wolfeboro? Top of Rattlesnake, Varney, Worcester, Barndoor Islands? It is an expansive area to be covered to protect POTUS. This isn't the Mass State Police protecting the Gov. It's the Secret Service protecting the President of the United States. I don't think it is a rope 125 ft from shore. Think about folkes. I could be a BIG zone!

meredith weekender 06-21-2011 07:47 PM

Pine needles is right. We could have submarines, coast guard cutters and aircraft carriers positioned around the lake.:laugh::laugh: maybe the secret service will take over the islands as lookouts?:laugh::laugh:

fatlazyless 06-21-2011 08:18 PM

In March, 1991, Vice President Dan Quayle went skiing at Waterville Valley and his vice president's airplane landed at Laconia Airport. Traveling up Rt 93 from Gilford to WV, Rt 93 was closed on both sides, north and south, and the VP caravan traveled north on the south bound side. When he was skiiiing the secret service surrounded him on the ski trail almost like a football team protecting the quarterback plus the ski trail was roped off closed at the top.

For Mitt to become the president would mean some very good business for Sawyer's ice cream and fried clams what with all the government people flying into Laconia Airport.

When MITT becomes president and wants to show off his waterski trick with the step ladder attached to the aquaboard, most likely he'll be surrounded by a group of waterskiing secret service. Way-to-go MITT!

I think it would be great to have a Air Craft Carrier (USS Nimitz) a submarine USS New Hampshire SSN??? A destroyer escort, and a battlewagon stationed at Lake W. But what would be better is to see them get it there and launch it. The Winniupasaukee Bell had quiten a trip from Portsmouth to Alton Bay and then a job in launching her. and that is not much bigger than a life boat on the Nimitz. Naaw...think BIIIG. How about a *bunch* of aircraft carriers, stretching from T'boro neck to Laconia. End to end. So you could drive across. Think of how much time you'd save driving across the lake instead of around it! Suddenly all the online 'search for our closest store' searches would be useful!!!

This might be a good analogy. Back when I was a kid, 7th, 8th, 9th grade (late 70's, early 80's) my best friend's next door neighbors were very very wealthy. They owned a summer home, oceanfront, in Kennibunkport, Maine. My friend was an only child, so whenever his family travelled with the neighbors to Kennibunkport for a weekend, he took a friend along so he had something to do, as the adults pretty much "cocktailed" all weekend. What a great place to spend time in the summer...although I was far to young to appreciate it. Anyway...as a kid, I got to know the people who owned the home. Well, later in life, by coincidence, they came into my pace of business and I recognized them. We talked for quite some time, and I inquired as to what the town was like after Bush Senior became president (the Bush family owns a summer home in Kennibunkport, for anyone who may not know). They said it all started when he was Vice President...1981. And only got worse. When a trip was planned to Kennibunkport by Bush, the "forward team" of secret service would show up to town days ahead doing security sweeps, and closing many well travelled roads. When Vice President Bush (later President Bush) was actually there, sections of beaches were closed, and many more streets. The folks I knew expressed that it was extremely intrusive, and often made it very difficult to enjoy a weekend. The secret service acted in a way that was not at all sensitive to the fact that many of the wealthy summer residents simply wanted to go about their business. Street closings often cause traffic jams, and made simple trips to the diner for breakfast impossible.
And that was back in the 80's. I can only imagine what type of security messures are taken in this day and age.
I would think a president spending a couple of days at his lake house will not be a good thing. Especially if he decides to go out to dinner or do some bar hopping (probably not bar hopping).

John A. Birdsall 06-22-2011 03:19 PM

whales

Well, I told my grand kids that there were whales in the lake, and I said here comes one now. My wife did not speak for a month!:emb:

LIforrelaxin 06-22-2011 05:26 PM

If Mitt where to become president, or even just become the Republican Candidate, The lake would never be the same. Once secret service comes into the picture, there will be whole sale changes when he is in town... further more you have to deal with those changes even after he leave office as the Secret Service stays involved after he leave office.

On the flip side property values around the lake would sky rocket....Much as the do everywhere a president has a home.

Now on the flipside, things do calm down after a president is out of office for a while. Last year while in Kennebunk Port for our honeymoon, we where informed that the elder Bush was at Walkers Point for the long weekend... the differences where very subtle, around town... First his boat went from the harbor area, out to a morning just off shore, and the two secret service boats left harbor and started Patroling around the point. After that there really wasn't an intrusion on life around the area. However having said that, last year marked something like 14 years or so out office for President Bush Sr.

NoBozo 06-22-2011 07:02 PM

MY FRIENDS: This is NOT a problem. Just vote for The ONE...and the lake will not be affected. :D :D NB

lawn psycho 06-23-2011 03:19 AM

The Bush's actually fly into Sanford, not Pease. They take motocade to K-port.

I live not far from Walker's point. When the family is there, it's not that big a deal it's when he's on the move and streets get closed, etc it can be a pain.

When Bush's boat is on the mooring ball, two divers inspect it before they bring him out to hop onboard. The have a Coast Guard boat that patrols around the property and if you try to get close on the water they will send you away from the area. There are cameras all over the property. I ride my bike along Ocean Ave and the property is fenced and you can see they have every angle covered.

If Romney becomes the GOP candidate and/or the president, I suspect a fairly large area will be blocked off as a restricted area on the water. That would likely be the only impact on the water.

When the motorcade is on the move, the streets are closed, they have a couple forward posted vehicles that conduct sweeps and then next thing you know the limo streaks by with agents hanging out of vans and suburbans in close proximity to the president. The motorcade does not follow the posted speed limit that is for sure:)

When President Nixon took office, I watched as an island near Miami became his second home—and Key Biscayne then changed drastically. I had friends on Key Biscayne which at that time, was a sleepy community of modest one-story ranch homes, long public beachfronts, and wide-open spaces.

But today? :eek2:

Quote:

"Key Biscayne is one of the wealthiest communities in the United States. The community, which is only accessed by boat and the Rickenbacker Causeway, served as the Florida home to former president, Richard Nixon and actor Andy Garcia...

The community of Key Biscayne is an affluent population by local and national standards...The median household income for Key Biscayne is $86,599...The property values of Key Biscayne reach a total of $2 billion and Key Biscayne ranked number 134 on Worth’s’ 250 Richest U.S towns in 2001.

In September of 2004, the town mayor restricted the use of wave runners and jet skis within 300 feet of the shoreline. The city also has begun the groundwork to implement new zoning codes that would prompt redevelopment and protect Key Biscayne’s “character.”

The island currently contains five public parks and about 30 acres of beach.
http://mpoportal.fiu.edu/community_h...cfm?hist_id=22
While the number of public parks is up, "wide open-spaces" for the public is down.

A land-rich Miami family donated a huge coconut plantation for the "open-air enjoyment" of every person: local "Movers and Shakers" fought that generous and philanthrophic donation in court, and now Key Biscayne has Professional Tennis Championships instead. :rolleye2:

I hope Romney sells his place before any radical change arrives at the Lakes Region.

Kamper 06-23-2011 06:52 AM

If only somebody would buy the place. Then there'd be no problem.

Slickcraft 06-23-2011 08:12 AM

If it becomes Lake MittWinni, the Marine Patrol budget will get a big bump up.

Fortunately for us Welch Island would be outside the security perimeter excepting a probable infrequent boat ride. With the "Beast" limo weighing an estimated 14,000 lbs, a special boat may have to be constructed to carry the functional equivalent around the lake in style.

I missed a day of classes now and then. Remind me again, why would anyone want to be President? Where exactly is Clark's Point when traveling by boat. I would like to find Romney's house when out on the lake. I looked on the Duncan chart and I can't seem to find it.

tis 06-28-2011 11:30 AM

From downtown Wolfeboro by boat, follow the shoreline on your left going by Brewster Academy, then Brewster (Sandy) Beach. Continue around the "corner". That outermost point is Clark's Pointe. It is a few houses beyond that.

I am not very good at explaining things but hope that helps. You really can't miss it though if you just continue along that shore.

jrc 06-28-2011 11:35 AM

As I understand it, the Romney house is on the east side of Springfield Point.

If you find Little Barn Door Island on the chart, due east of there is the Varney Islands, then Worcester Island then Springfield Point.

Wow I guess I'm at the wrong house.

When Mitt gets elected....no more skinny dipping!

Well, skinny dipping after dark would be out. Who knows how many SS divers' eyes would be peering up from the depths around the bay! :D

Much activity surrounding the premises would be monitored, I would think. More so a few weeks before he comes to town and during the visit. Plain clothes surveillance, video cameras strategically placed, etc. I'll lend the SS the motion-activated camera I gave hubby a few years ago -- it's still in the box!

I would imagine the poor people of Wolfeboro will see gridlock when he's on the move, but that would be about it. Dignitaries would not likely come to NH, but the White House or Camp David. Logistically a nightmare for all. They'll likely not draw any more attention to a visit as necessary, unless it involves good PR for the WH.

Merrymeeting 06-28-2011 01:29 PM

My in-laws live a short way outside of Kennebunkport. My recollection is that Bush's presence there was of minimal impact.

As others have mentioned, he rarely entertained dignitaries there.

If anything, some of the businesses complained that people stayed away because they assumed it was going to be crowded/crazy.

On occasion, there would be the random road closure, but not enough to worry about.

My biggest worry would be the after affect of all the publicity that our beloved small town would get.

lawn psycho 06-28-2011 07:39 PM

merrymeeting, the biggest factor that determines the impact to you is if you are on the actual route. To Walker's point there are lots of other paths you can choose to get around if you know the area.

In the case of the Lake, if you happen to be driving around the lake on a busy weekend day and a Presidential Motorcade is on the move, you may change your opinion:D It's certainly not the end of the world but you can be held up in traffic for a while if you hit the right place at the wrong time.

Janet Napolitano is the third and current United States Secretary of Homeland Security.

Under her brilliant stewardship we now get photographed naked to get on a plane and our grand mother has her diaper searched. The references to the enhanced security to get on the Mount if Mitt was to become the prez gave me the very pleasant thought that perhaps we might get someone in the position that could stop terror without creating more of it in the process.

Air Force 1 is not always the widebody 747. It's whatever plane the president flies on.

When Bush I and Bush II were up for trips to Maine, the most common method was for them to fly the smaller plane into Sanford and then use motorcade to K-port. Sometimes, they would use the 747 into Pease but that was the exception, not the norm. Then they high-tailed it up the Maine Turnpike.

If Romney were to get elected President, there are a couple options they could do. They could fly to Pease and helicopter to Laconia then motorcade. They could do the same operation but instead fly to Sanford then Laconia via heli. Or the could use a plane direct to Laconia but I don't know enough about what planes they use and runway length to know what works and what doesn't.

Here's a picture of Air Force One at Sanford Maine I snagged from the web. You can clearly see it's not a 747....

Rattlesnake Guy 07-02-2011 09:37 PM

Marine One can land on three plywood disk on the White House lawn. I am sure they can find a spot near Brewster or the Golf Course. If I was over there, I would be proud to let Marine One land in my yard no matter who was aboard.

As long as I could post the pictures of course. :D

When I am in DC, I always stop to look up in pride of the power of the office of the President.

Perhaps the huggin's pad? Or Wolfeboro neck at the Marriots "airport", or, there are other private pads in town.

tis 07-03-2011 06:32 AM

Romney is a friend of the Marriot's so maybe---. Never thought of that.

Romney in the Lakes Region for the 4th.

KBoater 07-03-2011 01:58 PM

Brewster Fields

Mitt will pay Brewster Academy $$$$$$$ to land Marine one on their fields
and no impact to traffic will happen except for the beach goers at Brewster Beach.
However roping off part of Winni will happen.
Just my solution.

It was a Marriott executive who suggested that Romney buy in Wolfeboro.

Only behind closed doors my friend....only behind closed doors.... By the way, one of these Monday mornings, I should pick you up at your dock for a day of fishing.

True. Maybe they'll recondition an amphibian out of moth-balls and resurect the call-sign "Navy One."

OMG, It would be most appreciated my friend! My son has been bitten by the bass disease after I told him about the "reef" that exists off our dock that you told me about. He suspected such, and has since pulled multiple bass as well as a very cantankerous pickeral from this "line" that you drew for me. The "slugos?" you gave me that day have worked everywhere. CT River, Winnie, you name it. Thank you again! J's preffered lure is mostly now topwater lures but he has introduced me to salty crayfish.

We will be up there the first week of September, J and I, and would love to hook up with you. He wants to rent a pontoon for the week and I am in agreement that this would be the best way to access the weedy areas that produce. I was real disspointed to hear about Conway's closing. It's nice when your son appreciates fin and fur as a pasttime.

topwater 07-04-2011 09:43 PM

Consider it done.. Shoot me a IM when your up for the week.

Mitt must have been spending the holiday weekend up at the lake, because he was in Laconia's 4th of July parade yesterday! I figure it was the closest one to his place so he could do a little campaigning and get back to enjoying the lake.

That is an awesome Idea.....
Wouldn't that be something, having to hold the Mount out in the Broads while he did his arrival and departures?
LOL!:D

Well...

he lives in his sons unfinished basement... according to voter registration in Belmont Mass. :rolleye1:

Argie's Wife 07-06-2011 01:58 PM

I was living in Wells, ME when the Papa Bush was president, and lemme tell you... nothing could screw up summertime traffic like Team Pres coming into town... and that was before 9-11 - security wasn't as tight back then as it is today!

And isn't there an airport in Wolfeboro or Tuftonboro?

ClosetExtrovert 07-06-2011 02:05 PM

Just to keep the lake unfettered

I will offer up my own personal govenor Christie for a substitute. He's a little rough around the edges, but seems to be getting the job done. Oh..and he's fat. Hope that's not a problem.

There used to be an airport in Wolfeboro on Wolfeboro Neck but someone decided it would be better suited as a Condo Park. Trouble is, nobody was buying or building. I think the Marriot's own the land now.

There's no airport in Tuftonboro. Nearest airport on the Wolfeboro side of the lake is on Rt 25 in Moultonboro. :D NB

Barbara 07-06-2011 03:56 PM

The Marriott's do own whatwas once the airport. It was subdivided into building lots with septic systems and underground utilities in place before the bottom dropped out of the housing market. The Marriott's bought the whole shebang. They have close ties to the Romney's and it would be an easy place to land a helicopter. However, I recently talked to someone who worked in the White House under Bush and asked about how he would get into town if he were President. The answer I was given was that he would fly into Pease on Air Force One and then by helicopter right up to the neighborhood which could be the hospital, golf course, Clark Park. There would not be a lot of traffic tie ups, but the people who live down Clark Rd. In the area where he lives will have tough screening to go through every time they go in or out whenever he would be in residence.

jrc 07-06-2011 04:19 PM

Let's assume he will land in Pease and drive the motorcade in normal situations. According to the map thing it's 47 minutes. It's 42 minutes to Laconia, but that means a smaller plane or a transfer of planes.

In emergency situation they can land Marine One on the golf course or in the lake! The usual helicopter is amphibious.

tis 07-06-2011 04:33 PM

The runway of the old Wolfeboro Airport is now a road, but it really would make a better runway than what used to be there.

lawn psycho 07-06-2011 06:35 PM

When Obama visited Acadia National Park in Maine, he arrived in a Gulfstream III. Clinton also flew on a Gulfstream III

Who knows what they'll use but given the short flight from Andrews AFB to New England it makes more sense to fly the smaller planes.

Again, I will be surprised if they don't use Sanford. They already have the logistics worked out and can heli from there.

I was in Claremont in 94/95 when Clinton visited. I have seen a fair share of motorcades;)

ApS 07-07-2011 08:20 AM

No Airports in Tuftonboro...?

 ...but my Dad tells me, at one time, there were many airports in Tuftonboro! :(

'Course, that was in the 1930s, when any green field was "an airport". :emb:

—including the 10th green at the "Bald Peak Golf Course" :eek2: where many golfer-pilots would land to play golf!

:)

Apparently, even people in LA find Mitt's Wolfeboro residency an interesting topic.
