To those of you familiar with the "Yeti" line of insulated coolers and tumblers, you realize how well they work but are just crazy expensive.

I have one of these and they do work fantastic especially on those hot boating days. These things will keep your favorite drink ice cold all day without the ice melting.

Well if you want a screaming deal, go to your local SAMs club and you can buy two for $19.95!! They are the EXACT same thing as the Yeti except Yeti is not imprinted on the side. I bought a set and compared it to my Yeti and no doubt they are manufactured at the same place. You can also buy them online but unfortunately they are out of stock right now. The Manchester Club had a ton of them however!

It is kind of but a Yeti is basically the abominable snowman from Nepal hence the cooling effect of their products. Their coolers are crazy money, just crazy...

My son works at Dicks sporting goods and gets a discount.
He picked up a tumbler for me for $30, granted it is still expensive but worth it. I filled it with ice and used it all day, 26 hours later it still had ice in it! It also keeps my coffee hot longer too.
He also got a special coupon which enabled him to get me the new hopper 40 for for 50% off, that was a $400 cooler. Thing works awesome!

RTIC is the same material and design as YETI..... but for $18.25 on amazon... 30oz as well.

Yetis might be pricey. But I have had ice in mine for 8 days now... Really amazing how well they keep ice

Wolfeboro's Harvest Market, across from Clarke Plaza, has a Yeti display in their beverage annex—behind the deli. There are two different models of Yeti products displayed and, yes, they are pricy. :eek:

Now that you have had the ones from Sam's how do they compare to the Yeti? Does the ice last just as long?

Yes! They are the exact same thing! Only difference one is stamped "Yeti" and the other "Members Mark" (Sam's brand).

After a weekend of watered down lemonade, I did some research on these and found FIVE good options: Sam's/Member's Mark, Yeti, RTIC, Mossy something, and Ozark Trail. YouTube tests show these all perform about the same (within minutes for ice melt times and a degree or two for warming-up times). The difference, of course, is price.

So, picked up a set of Sam's for $20, as mentioned above, but they're really big, so I also picked up 20 oz. Ozark Trails at Walmart for $7.74 each to see which fit/I like better. Test run weekend!

RTIC and Grizzly are two other companies I will vouch for. Both solid products, very similar to the yeti. Prechilling all of these coolers makes a big difference in how long they keep ice too.

The 30 oz. cups are too big for my cupholders (and hands), so I'm going with these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trai...mbler/49772705. These tested as well as RTIC and Yeti. I'll report back.

I've used the Ozark Trail 20 oz. insulated tumblers for a couple months now, and these things rock! http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trai...mbler/49772705. We can get a whole day of ice out of them. The only caveat is that the lid, which is clear, needs to be covered. No matter how hot the corner of my helm gets, the ice stays solid, but I think the clear top lets the sun in too much.

I purchased a Yeti 65 cooler, yes a big expense but worth the money in my opinion. I gave it a test with how long ice would last and got 5 days out of it. I figure with all the activities and camping we do, over time the money saved on ice will pay for the cooler. I highly recommend yeti coolers!

I picked up a yeti on eBay today for $24 shipped. Also got the can cooler for $17.

I already have 1 of each and paid $35-40 each at parafunalia.

If these Ozark Trail tumblers work just as well as the Yeti why would anyone in their right mind pay 4 times as much for the Yeti, other than needing to have the Yeti name on display to impress people.

I have an RTIC and a South Jetty and I was curious how you go about pre chilling yours? One is a 60L and one is a 20L.

A lot of people use dry ice, I couldn't even tell you where to get dry ice around here so what I do is this, usually I use the cooler mainly for the weekends as more of a storage cooler to not have 100+ cans in my fridge, I will throw a 2-3 bags of ice (full ice not broken up yet) into the cooler on like Tuesday/Wednesday, let it sit untouched until Thursday night/ Friday whenever I go beer/drink shopping and then will drain what ever water accumulated from that day of melting, open up the bags and spread the ice on the bottom, insert drinks, ice on top and good to go.

Cant speak for the RTIC or south jettys but the Yeti is not an open shut open shut kind of cooler in my opinion. So I will keep this cooler on my deck or dock and then grab whatever we think we will drink on the boat into a soft shell (grizzly) cooler to save space on the boat. I also have the 65 size so the things stupid heavy to be taking on the boat. Prechilling it I usually see an extra day or two out of the ice, but the melted water is still nice and chilly afterwards.

Thanks for the reply. We kind of do it the same way, I fill the 60L with roughly 60lbs of ice on Friday am and that is my ice for the weekend. So when I need ice in the other coolers I just take from that cooler and put into the smaller coolers to go on the boat etc. It is also nice to not have to buy ice for the ride home either if we are bringing any kind of food home for the week, plus I can buy 25lbs of ice at BJ's for $3.99 which is a good price in my opinion. I agree with you that the roto molded coolers are VERY heavy, even without all the ice in them.

Prechilling a cooler? Thats a new one on me. An insulated cooler does just that, it insulates. Insulation does not "hold" cold or heat, it slows down transmission from one to the other. You need a heat sink of some sort to "store" the cold. FWIW:confused:

Yes prechilling a cooler, you are correct that it does not hold cold or heat its slows the transmission. But do you leave your coolers in a fridge for storage? If the coolers left in the sun all week the cooler will be hot, you arrive at your lake house on Friday and proceed putting cold ice into a hot cooler, it will surely melt the ice quicker than putting ice into a "prechilled" or already cold cooler.

When I first got the thing I said that's nonsense, a year and a half later I always pre chill.

If stored in warm places, a significant amount of ice will be wasted cooling the cooler itself. Preload your cooler a few hours prior to use with a sacrificial bag of ice to cool it down.

The only part I would agree with is if the cooler has been in sun. As you posted, "if stored in a warm place" it will hold the warm air. I say dont store it in a warm place if possible. There is virtually nothing in that cooler that will hold cold air except the air itself. I didn't make it up, its physics.:laugh:

I'd be curious if the Yeti products are "Dewar flasks" (Thermos® type—sealed vacuum glass) cups with a stainless steel covering.

Although expensive at the time, I bought one as a coffee mug about 30 years ago. It was made in Japan, has a stainless steel cover, and has lasted many years. The seal—of an unknown flexible material—between the glass and the metal covering started to leak, so I put it aside to repair "later". :rolleye2:

One thing I noticed about my Ozark Trail cups, and I'm sure it's for the others as well, is the insulating effect is heartily diminished when in direct sunlight. It appears it's not so much from the warmth of the cup as they're in cupholders and cool to the touch, but the sunlight getting through the clear top. Thoughts? Fixes?

I have both the Yeti and the Sam's version which are exactly the same thing and I did a test...Filled both with same number of ice cubes and filled with water. Left both in hot sun (90+ degree day) starting at 10:00 AM. At 10:00 AM the following day, both tumblers still had ice in it.

Unless it takes you more than 24 hours to finish your drink, whatever effect the sun has through the clear top simply would not seem to matter...

If you don't like the sun streaming in through the clear cover, then block it with some duct tape!

I bought a fridge decades ago for the boat. Heat sink, runs on battery power. I wired mine directly to the battery. Would keep everything cold after being disconnected. It would heat also.
Then when I grew up and matured a little at college graduation I bought a Styrofoam cooled for my move to California. Put a bag of ice in and the cold stuff. When I arrived in California 6 1/2 days later with the cooler in my boat there was only a small amount of water in the cooler.
Funny when entering CA they asked if I had any plants etc. as they looked at the boat loaded with my life's belongings. Nope, but go ahead and feel free to unload for a look.
Sorry, I digress. Happens with old age.

Clorox gel cleaner, a spritzer bleach gel cleaner good for cleaning out mold and mildew from plastic surfaces, that sells for about 3.29 at Walmart goes a long way for restoring a bargain priced Igloo style cooler that you found at a thrift store or garage sale.

One man's trash is another man's treasure with www.clorox.com/Bleach_Gel ..... it will stick to a vertical surface and does a serious deep cleaning over maybe ten minutes time.

Also works super duper on polypropylene and fiberglass sailboats and kayaks to bring them back to clean. Clorox bleach gel ...... makes a great Christmas gift .....Clorox Gel Cleaner in the $3.29 spritzer bottle ..... even comes in a twin-pak!

As the saying goes ...... one man's trash is another man's good quality stuff at a very low price ...... Clorox Gel Cleaner get's it almost back to new clean .... this stuff works very good.

The lakes region is like the ground zero area for thrift stores and yard/garage type sales.

Finding a grubby Igloo cooler at a garage sale that needs a good scrubb'n with the gel cleaner is very usual.

I see you have quite a bit of experience in trash picking. Stay out of my trash!

Yeti seems to be a brand somewhat similar to the Range Rover car.

Have yet to see anything made by Yeti at a thrift store, or a garage sale, simply must trek over to Wolfeboro and start examining their thrift stores, look'n for a Yeti. When I find that Yeti, will snap it up and keep it on my mega, mega, million dollar 53' sailing yacht..... that was a totally super-duper garage sale find from over in Wolfeboro.:D

No way to score a www.Yeti.com at the Meredith transfer station, free store! Best to head over to Wolfeboro and peruse its' free store, look'n for that Yeti. My friend has a Yeti. It keeps ice forever but it's obviously expensive and not very big. Unless you are going to the desert for 8 days I don't see the point.

But, speaking of trash, I got my hands on a few coolers that Omaha Steaks mails in and they are great. Not very durable since they are just Styrofoam but they are about 3" thick and keep ice for a long time.

Using a Styrofoam cooler is like using brown paper bags for luggage. They will get the job done but they are not good for your image at all. :)
