Record water temps?

Seeing the water temp posted over a week ago as 79 I am wondering how high that number will go with the approaching heatwave. Water temp of 79 is the highest I recall. Anybody remember it being warmer than 79?

86 and skunky

Can't tell you the year, but the temp hit 86 at least once for at least a day or two and frequently gets into the low 80s. The algae blooms, especially the cotton candy blobs, start happening more quickly at those temps.

If you are curious, this website provides modeled real time temperature for the lake

More Global Warming? 🔥

The water temperature at East Bear Island has exceeded 80 degrees several times over the years. This morning it is 77 degrees at -18". 🐻

fire/ice

The temp in Meredith Bay has exceeded 82 the past two years. At the same time, the earliest freeze I remember was two years ago and the past 2 years have had over 24 inches of ice in front of my house. It is amazing how quickly this massive lake changes temperature with at least a 50 degree swing in the past 4.5 months.

I remember very well, it was 1988 when we had a stretch of 90+ degree days. My nephew was born 7/21/88 and we were in a stretch of hot weather and the lake got to 84 degrees. We tied our inflatable floats to a tree in front of Sandy Point & just stayed in the water in that shady spot all afternoon.

Toasty

The water temperature at East Bear Island this afternoon was 81 degrees. Our guests from Ohio and Alabama have been enjoying refreshing swims. 🐻

Best of Both Worlds

I recall how the prevailing winds of the Lake bring the warm surface waters on shore at the beach on the western side of Long Island, water like a Hot-Tub, and just across the road to the east, where the boats anchor the water is back down into the refreshing mid seventies.

I love the lake in early September when the water is warmer than the air and you can jump in to warm up.

water temps

Will vary slightly depending on where you are on the lake and at which depth you monitor. At South point on Long Island yesterday at 3' it was 80-which BTW is still pretty damn refreshing!

Brrrrr?

The water temperature at East Bear Island on this Friday the thirteenth is 68 degrees. Get out your wool bathing suit. However, a full harvest moon will provide illumination for skinny dipping. 🐻
